In their defense I had no idea how to interact like a normal human.In any case, any of my teachers would be perplexed about me and give me mixed reviews on my report cards and progress reports. Often times I’d get “pleasure to have in class” stamped on it, but “has trouble turning in work, highly disorganized, constantly drawing and not paying attention in class” scribbled in the notes below. Sometimes I’d distract others around me cause they all wanted to see what I was drawing or have me draw them something.I was in the accelerated/gifted student program but almost got kicked out twice because I never did the homework. Instead of doing higher level stuff, we just got assigned extra homework and projects that were on the same level as everyone else. I never turned things in because the load was huge and I just didn’t have the attention span to care. I would end up sort of just vegging out and not doing ANYTHING which the teacher didn’t take to very well.In high school, I found a groove and a few good friends who were like-minded but that was as close as I got to true comfort. A lot of the time, with me, when some teachers found out I have ADHD, they are surprised because I’m “so quiet” and “well behaved” when in reality I am typically unmotivated, unfocused, or hyperfocused on (usually the wrong) something, and easily distracted.I think a lot of people have stigma about ADHD and, if they believe it exists, they assume if you have it, you are going to be this hyperactive ball of mouthing off and physical humor a la Jim Carey. People might assume you will act that way or that you can’t focus on anything ever and they might judge you based on those assumptions alone. People sort of expect you to act and react a certain way and will prepare themselves to react to that, when it’s all just unnecessary precaution on their part.Like with most mental illness and personality/neurological disorders, people who treat us differently because we have ADHD are not educated on what ADHD actually is and how it works. It doesn’t matter how nice or polite or wonderful a person you are,many times people will just go off of what they assume and have been told before without really learning about the individual and the disorder itself. The best, and really only way to fix this is to educate people. Help people learn what ADHD is. Learn what it isn’t. Learn how it works and how it can be different for everyone who has it. The more people get the truth, the less they will try to fill in the gaps themselves.
