Fiancee and I moved into our townhouse a year ago. Became great friends with many of the neighbors. weekend get togethers, drinks at the gazebo after work etc. I became president of the HOA . My fiancee did some contracting work for our closest “friend”, across the street. It all went south from there. They had a disagreement about what work should or should not have been done. He refused to pay $900 of the work he had done. Then he lost his job, got dumped by a girl he was dating and it all got worse.Eventually, he teamed up with 4 other neighbors who disliked my fiancee and they started using the legal system to harass us. They filed FIVE protective orders, 1 disorderly conduct and a violation of the protective order. We had to go to COURT and pay a ton in lawyers fees . Thank goodness all charges were dismissed. Boy, were they mad after that. Then the harassment really began.We’ve had the police called on us for trimming bushes and a tree, because they claimed he was “staring” at them amongst other ridiculous things.The 4 angry little neighbors went door to door through the neighborhood to badmouth my fiancee that he was a “menace to society” and a “criminal” and a “bigot”-none of which is true. They said since I was the president of the HOA I needed to be removed because I brought him into the neighborhood and didn’t do anything about it. Myself and our friend, who was on the board as well, were both recalled and kicked off the board. Three out of the 4 got themselves replaced to the board and now have made it there sad little life work to harass us.We have been recorded wherever we talk, walk or go in the neighborhood. We recently received “cease and desist” letters from the management company because one of them claimed my fiancee was walking across the street and obstructed one of the jerks from driving down the road. Really? How? did he throw himself on the car? no………..They also have ordered us to remove a donated firepit (a silly propane fire feature table you find at any restaurant/hotel/bar) and chairs from a common area that we set up to bring the neighborhood together for social gatherings. The worst part is, the neighbor who started all this, he’s the one who put together the original petition to allow it! Now that he hates us and is on the board, he is demanding it be removed What a hypocrite!Most recently, my finacee was at the mailbox with another neighbor. He knew she has signed the petition to have me removed from the board. He asked her why she would do that. Especially since he had helped her with power washing her deck and some other things around her condo. She said it was the “principal” of it. They talked/disagreed and then my fiancee said “whatever “and “have a good day” and walked away. Her husband comes down to our house thumping his chest and fisting his hands yelling that my fiancee better never “f%&king” talk to his wife without him around ever again. They had words. They then called the merry band of 4 jerks as to what they should do. They were advised by the HOA BOARD to file a protective order and disorderly conduct. They even told them how to fill out the forms and what to do.We get to back to court AGAIN next month. Yes, I know, we are MOVING!

I was married to a hoarder and I should have seen the writing on the wall. First of all her parents were hoarders although they did their best to hide their depression-era saving stuff habits from public view. The large living room of their Victorian house had been walled in half obstensively to create another bedroom which was never really finished and instead became a room full of boxes and furniture with a couple skinny aisles. It was the same with the “spare room” upstairs as well as the attic space. I was young and didn’t know a thing about hoarding so I guess I figured that it was just a quirk on their part. So when we married we bought ourselves a small 2-family house with a detached garage. I should have known what was coming when that garage quickly filled up with crap that she didn’t want to get rid of. My wife was addicted to yard sales, garage sales, flea markets and auctions and was always looking for a great deal on primitive or Victorian furniture, depression ware and other stuff. However we soon ended up with boxes and boxes of questionable value crap that she envisioned selling someday. I should have seen it coming..Fast forward a few years we buy a 3 story semi in an area renowned for it’s antiquing atmosphere and before I knew it we had an antique store on our first floor and were doing an OK business. I’d refinish furniture and she’d display all the other tchotchke’s that she’d collect, usually at an auction where in order to get the one thing you wanted you had to buy boxes of other crap that came with it. To be fair she was pretty decent at sniffing out the bargains but was terrible at giving up the near worthless garage sale stuff which soon filled up the rest of the house. I’m talking rooms full of stuff so much that you could barely get from one end to the other. I’d spend half my time just trying to organize and the other half of my time arguing about it. You see my mother was from Germany and my father’s mother was from Germany where they don’t look kindly on living in a messy environment so I wasn’t raised that way. I should have grown a pair a lot sooner than I eventually did but “.. in sickness and in health..” and all that.Now we’re up to the point where we had to rent space for all the stuff that wouldn’t fit in the house anymore. We started doing flea markets to try and reduce the inventory but that was only a drop in the bucket. Sometimes she’d buy more crap than we sold!Ok so then we were able to sell the place for huge profit during the mid 80’s when real estate was at it’s peak and buy an old house in the country. I thought that finally we had the opportunity to lighten our load but if anything it got worse, due partially to her deteriorating mental health (bi-polar with schizophrenic tendencies). The house didn’t have a garage so we had one built, a real nice two-car detached pole barn with a third bay for my workshop and a loft upstairs that was supposed to be for a playroom including an antique pool table that my parents had. Guess what ended up there instead? Furniture, boxes and more boxes, loose crap and other crap, some of it worth something and much of it worth nothing. In the house it was a daily struggle to keep things presentable and our social life suffered because of it. The living room was full. The attached porch, full. The master bedroom, full with a skinny aisle to both sides of the bed and that was about it. The attic, full of crap. The basement, full of crap.The kitchen? OMG! We were able to buy new appliances and it included a pair of nice Sub Zero units, a fridge and separate matching freezer, both ~20 cu ft. in size. In no time at all the freezer was so full of whatever she could find on sale that you almost couldn’t close the door. The fridge almost always had stuff in the rear rotting away. There was so much stuff in the kitchen you were lucky if you could even see the nice Corian countertops I installed myself. We had two antique corner cupboards in the dining room full of canned goods and perishables like flour. Have you ever seen a flour moth? Have you ever seen dozens? I have! I’d walk around with a vacuum hose trying to get them all.Fast forward another 7 years of arguing, shrinks and escapism on my part in the form of affairs and I finally came to her one day and threw in the towel and presented her with my divorce demands. Of course she wanted to seek counseling to which I responded, “NOW you want to get counseling?!”.When we sold the house the judge allowed her to keep what she wanted ( I didn’t want ANY of it) and whatever she couldn’t put in storage by a certain date I was allowed to auction off and split the proceeds. I filled up a large Ryder truck twice and took it all to auction and it brought in something like $12 grand. We had three garage sales in a row and even after selling a whole lot of stuff at bargain basement pricing I still ended up filling up two 30 yard dumpsters. Can you imagine?So that’s how I dealt with my hoarder, I divorced her. She refused to seek any help other than the one therapist she had seen for years who wasn’t doing her any good. In fact she ended up getting EST multiple times and today she’s living back in the packed-to-the-gills house she grew up in (her parents both died) along with her even crazier hoarder sister. It’s like Gray Gardens in there, I swear! Even my daughter does her best to avoid the drama.A good friend at work who had gone through a pricey divorce once told me, “You know why divorce is so expensive don’t you? Because it’s worth it!”. So true because had I stayed much longer I would have lost my own mind. It must really be worth it because I have to pay $2000/month alimony, FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE (or hers)! Seems in NJ if the wife isn’t very employable thanks to mental disease the spouse has to pick up the tab. I’ve spent thousands trying to get it reduced but to no avail. I could get it reduced when I retire but that’s not happening anytime soon because I can’t afford to. A real catch-22.Moral of the story; If you value your sanity don’t hook up with a hoarder because they never get any better.

I actually have some experience with both sides of this topic. I ran a ferret shelter for 15 years, and I’ve adopted dogs over the years, too.I was fairly picky about who adopted my shelter ferrets. It was my job to be sure they went to a good home with people who would really care for them. It broke my heart the times I found out the ferrets were being neglected. People would ask why I needed all this information. They’d say “I’m not adopting a child!” But to me, they were like children to me. Animals are innocent, can’t stand up for themselves, and don’t get to choose where they live or what they eat. I tried very hard to be sure the people who took those ferrets would really take care of them. Being human, I made mistakes and suffered for it.On the other hand, some places wouldn’t adopt to me because one of my ferrets is not neutered. Some places have rules that all other animals must be neutered or spayed, have a fenced-in yard, etc. Some ferret shelters won’t adopt to people with babies or small children because of liability issues.The trick is to strike a balance. I did adopt to people with children, but first, I had to see how the children behaved, how the parents reacted to the kids, and made sure the adult knew it was THEIR responsibility to make sure the ferret was kept clean, had food and water, and got to the vet when needed. Even with older children, I stressed that it was ultimately the parent’s obligation. I talked more people out of owning a ferret than into owning one. (Ferrets do have some special issues that dogs and cats don’t have, so they’re a bit harder to own.)Do I agree with some dog/cat shelters being very restrictive? To a point, but I do feel that some take it too far. I actually know a veterinarian who was turned down for adoption because she owned a non-neutered show dog. Show dogs are NOT neutered or spayed, otherwise they aren’t show dogs. The dog would have had a nice home, obviously gotten good vet care, had a fenced-in yard, etc. but they turned her down because her other dog wasn’t neutered. It wasn’t like she was breeding dogs, just showing them. She wanted to adopt a dog from the shelter as a pet.There are several reasons, I think, why some shelters are very strict. First, if you have a set of rules, it’s quicker and easier to follow them to pick homes. I spent a lot of time talking to people before I’d adopt to them. Public shelters don’t have that kind of time. When I was running the ferret shelter, if people got nasty with me, then I really didn’t want to work with them. It’s my choice. I don’t “sell” an animal like a pet store and end my relationship there. I like to keep in touch, see updates and photos, help with issues, etc. Shelters are not pet stores. Another main reason, in my opinion, is so they can sleep at night. It’s hard working at a shelter, watching nice animals brought in for euthanasia just because the people were tired of them. It’s hard dealing with some kinds of people who don’t feel any responsibility to really care for the animal, or worse, people who abuse animals. So people get tough out of self defense. It’s very stressful working at a shelter.
