I (an atheist Hindu) was recently traveling in a train with my Mom. She is a devout religious Hindu. With us was my Dad. He is an opportunistically religious Hindu (one who knows when to be religious). At the beginning of our journey, my Mom did her as usual prayer to the list of Gods she always keeps at her finger in case any emergency assistance might be required. When she opened her eyes, I was looking at her with a sarcastic look. She objected and said, in case of a real trouble only God can help us. I smiled and got back to my Kindle, reading Lee Smolin’s ‘Three Roads to Quantum Gravity’. Now she said sarcastically, “Science cannot supersede religion.”.Almost an hour later the train had a technical glitch. We asked a train ticket collector (TTC) about it and he said it was a mechanical or power transmission failure giving indication of a probable delay of couple of hours. It was unfortunate because we had an appointment. My mom began praying again after which she looked at me and Dad. Dad was asleep. I was reading. She poked me and asked, how long did I think, would take for the fix. I replied, “Ask your Gods. I don’t know the future.”. Knowing that she might have felt bad, I calmly explained my line of reasoning, “On a regular passenger commute line they cannot afford to have a broken down train for long, especially at a major junction.”. She half-heartedly accepted my explanation. Now my father woke up and asked whether a prayer was necessary.As I had predicted, the train began to move in 10 minutes. Mom offered her generous gratitude to her list of Gods for fixing the glitch. My father thanked his God for not having to pray and went back to sleep.P.S. Hinduism is the LINUX among all religions. We started getting repeated calls from the “US Grant Department” claiming that they would give us a grant of $6240(?) dollars, if we paid enrollment into the program or something. I’m sure there was some legal reason for the dollar amount, like it was a dollar under the felony fraud amount or something. After a couple of these, asking where the grant department was headquartered, why their phone number showed a different area code, legal questions, etc, I finally found a way that actually tripped up these scumsuckers… I answered that I was REALLY excited about their program, how I REALLY needed the money and was so glad that I was gonna get a grant… but that there was just one problem. I NEEDED MORE MONEY. I started asking about how to get a grant for $11,500, could they hook me up? I asked if there was a manager I could speak to to request a larger amount, form to fill out for a waiver for more, another grant program, whether my minor children could apply, how long it would take to get the money, and whether I could go again afterwards, how about $11,200? When they started to flounder and get rude with me I threatened to report them to their manager! That finally got them to quit the call.

When I was a post-doc in the USA at both universities where I worked I was given a yellow form to fill out. I honestly and correctly put myself down as “Australian” under “Other”.In both universities this was crossed out and I was assigned as being an “Asian-Pacific islander”. As far as I know I have no Asian or Pacific Islander descent. I was not asked my opinion on the matter. No-one came to check me out but I loved filling out the forms I was always being sent where I was expected to state how oppressed I was. It was quite true that a few people were nasty about my racial/ethnic origin in the USA but nothing like as bad as I got in Canada. Canada is the only country I ever worked in where being Australian was obviously held against me.If I had used my university awarded designation on some other form would I have been doing something naughty? After all I was designated Asian/Pacific Islander by appointed authority: I did not choose to make such a claim.The take-home message I got from the experience was that all racial/ethnic statistics in America were rubbish. Nobody goes round and checks people out - simply because it would be both illegal and impossible.By the way do realise I am of indefinite racial origin but there is no such documentation on birth certificates in Australia, even in the 19th century. I have photos of my mother and father and my maternal grandparents and nothing else. There is no-one alive I could ask about such matters.

No matter how much we develop our country in terms of technology and science it is our mentality and narrow outlook towards others that eats us from inside.
