Ah, my SSB story.16th February 2017, I received a mail stating that I had been shortlisted for UES Navy (Pilot/Observer) and that my SSB was 17th March. I was super thrilled, as this would be my very first SSB, and I had been expecting it for a very long time. I opened another attachment and found the list of all the shortlisted candidates. I scrolled down, but the list didn't seem to end. I went to the last page only to realize that a total of 440 candidates had been shortlisted.16th March arrived. I signNowed the center along with few friends who had also been shortlisted with me (they were all repeaters). Soon the bus arrived with the remaining candidates. The document verification started and finished by 9 pm. Then chest numbers are allotted (I am chest no. 176). The last chest no. is 317.17th March. First Day. SCREENING. OIR starts. OIR finishes. Very boring tests. I was slow in the verbal test, but managed to solve all in the non verbal test.Next we were taken for PP&DT. We were divided into groups of 17 candidates per group. Every body was shown the same picture and then group wise we went into the discussion room. We read our individual stories one by one (and I realized that my story was the only story that could be termed sensible), then the discussion started. I made sure that I was listening and paying full attention to everybody who was speaking and my posture was correct. I also tried to make a few points but was overshadowed every time and when everybody started speaking and creating ruckus, I just kept quiet. After all the groups were finished, we were called into the main hall and the qualified chest numbers were called out. So, from chest no. 176, I now became chest no. 28. In all, only 30 had cleared the screening round.18th March. The 30 of us were seated in the same hall for Psychology tests and shown the pictures for TAT, then 60 words for WAT, 60 situations for SRT and lastly 15 minutes for SD. Very boring activities, but I somehow managed to give my best. That day some candidates had their interviews and they got their certificates ready and went for their interviews. The rest of us were done for the day. We went out and roamed a little in the nearby market.19th March. We were divided into 4 groups and group-wise assembled for our Group tasks. Our GTO started with GPE followed by GD, next came PGT, HGT, snake race, lecturette and last activity being IO. I gave my best, tried to be as cooperative with my group as possible, gave suggestions, listened to others’ ideas. I managed to do 11 obstacles. I however, fumbled in my lecturette (my topic was sex education. I started off pretty good, but then fumbled while speaking).20th March. Group Task Day 2. We were only left with Command task and the FGT. We were done in about an hour and were free for the rest of the day. I had my interview and so went back to my room and changed into formals.INTERVIEW: I was called into the Deputy President’s cabin for my interview. I went in smiling and shook hands with him and went to my seat. He started by asking the predefined 10–15 questions in a rapid fire manner. I tried to answer as many as possible, giving examples to prove my points. He then went on to ask about my hobbies and how I manage my pocket money and what do I do on holidays. I answered all the questions with the same smile (though I was pretty nervous and my voice showed it). He asked me how my Group tasks had been to which I replied that the tasks had been good except lecturette as I had stage fright (he bought the statement as my voice still seemed nervous). I also told him that I had been working on this weakness and this stage is much better than 2 months ago. Next he asked me about the rank structure in navy and the current army and navy chiefs. He also asked me the Army and Navy commands. Then he asked my a few general awareness questions and we were done in about 40 minutes.21st March. The D-Day. The Conference day. I went in to see all the officers dressed in uniforms waiting to interact with me. They asked me about my stay and how I would like to rate my performance on a scale of 1 to 10 (I replied 8 with the potential to go up to 9). They also asked where all had I gone in the past 4–5 days. That was pretty much it. 5 minutes in all.Finally when everyone was done, we were all assembled in the same big hall and an officer walked up to us with a sheet of paper in his hands. These were his next exact words (and I can never forget them ever):‘Gentlemen, I have the list of the candidates to have been recommended. The list is in no particular order. When I call out the chest no., you will stand up and speak your name. CHEST NO. 28’I stood up (I really could not believe it and wanted him to speak my chest no. again) I was so excited that I spelled my name wrong (I just couldn’t help it).The officer asked me to repeat my name again correctly, which I did this time, taking time between the alphabets. When he was convinced, he asked me to sit down, then looked at his sheet, then to the candidates and said, ‘That will be all gentlemen. Only one of you has made it. Better luck next time.’So yup, that was my experience.OUT OF 317 CANDIDATES, I WAS THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE MADE IT.Even right now, it is quiet difficult for me to digest the fact that an average guy like myself was the only one recommended out of a batch of 317. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed.
