When I worked as a 9-1-1 operator there was a line of questioning developed to determine the priority of the call. These calls usually originated in a certain part of the city and the person calling usually reported a Black or Latino person acting "suspiciously."  Well 9-1-1 operators wanted to catch the bad guys, too. So we would try to determine what the "suspicious" behavior was. Was the person looking into car windows? House windows? Were they walking down the street?  They would report a Black or Latino male who was walking down the street or sitting in his car eating lunch. We erred on the safe side and would put out an information only call. Officers are aware of crime trends in the area and if an area has been experiencing a higher number of vehicle or house burglaries, then the information broadcast might be useful to the car that is patrolling that area.  One night a woman called from the West side of the city,  frantic because she heard a noise on the side of her house. There was a car nearby and we sent on a possible prowler at the location, no suspect description. We told her the police were on the way and to call back if she had a description.  She called back. "I have a description!" "Yes Ma'am, is the suspect Black, White, Latino or Asian?"  "They're two of them, and... and they are Black!"  "What color shirt and pants are they wearing?"  "They're both wearing dark clothing! Where are the police! Oh my God!!! They are on the side of my house looking around!  Get the police out here now! Hello? Hello?" "Unit at ____ the P/R is on the line. She describes the suspects as two male Blacks wearing dark clothing on the side of the house right now." "Control, that's us. The P/R is describing us. We're two Black officers. We're wearing dark clothing, our uniform. Tell the P/R to open the door and come out and talk to us. The noise she's reporting is a tree branch." The operators had it easy, it's a tougher call for an officer. Err on the side of safety and treat people respectfully and hope that situation turns out okay for everyone. My motto, everyone gets to go home.

I can completely relate to User’s answer, I am also more or less in the same situation, my parents sent me to Australia when I was a teenager for education purposes while they worked their arse off back home, now, my parents back then were typically lower middle class and strict Christian parents.Religion, My parents are both born again Christian and I was born Christian, I was baptised, went to church twice a week, I was indoctrinated to believe in God and to follow his teachings blindly, and after I turned 17 I realised how silly religion is, and became an atheist. Up until now I still struggle with my parents and I have some problems whenever this particular issue is brought up.There was no affection shown in my family, any typical Asian can attest that it’s not very common to see Asian parents show affection to each other or to the kids, I’ve never heard my parents say “I love you”, hug, kiss or hold hands. My parents almost never complimented me on anything, at most it was just “not bad, keep it up” and I never got a Christmas presents from them. This is just a little thing but I realised how this thing affected me as a person. No idea how to help in terms of handling paperwork, I had to handle all my own paperwork from school application, applying for my residency, visa, handle my own taxes, etc etc since I was a teenager.Sex education. It’s generally taboo to talk about sex openly in Asian household, my parents never taught me the importance of safe sex, contraception, STDs, etc, now that I think about it, it was quite risky to send their kid to a foreign country with the kid being clueless about sex. But thankfully I was able to learn on my own and not putting myself in a dangerous situation.Dating/marrying someone who’s not from my own race. They never understood this particular issue, they always thought that it’s always simpler and easier to have courtship with a person from a similar culture background, but they just didn’t realise that I involved culturally as well when they sent me abroad, so I wouldn’t say my culture is strictly all Asian. So, when they found out that I’m dating/marrying a white person, they were shocked and we had a bit of a rough patch but we managed to overcome it, and today my parents are very fond of my fiancée, like any other Asian parents, their love to my fiancée can be measured by how much food they are feeding her when we visit them.I was expected to survive on my own. Just like a baby bird being released from the nest for the first time, I was expected to be self reliant, they were not rich, they had to sell lots of things, I was given money for only limited amount of time and I had to support myself for the rest. But these things I’ve mentioned above are trivial, the thing that affected me the most was to see their hard work and support. The first time I ever understood the concept of “you have no idea how to appreciate what you have until you know how hard it is to earn one” was because of my parents, no matter how hard it was for me, they were always being supportive, as long as I was willing to do it wholeheartedly and not stop.Despite all the flaws and how clueless they were, they bent over backwards just to make sure I had something to eat, to make sure I could live another day. And for that, I am infinitely grateful and I wouldn’t change anything from my parents even if I had the chance, for me, they are perfect in every conceivable way.

We had a guy show up drunk to work and run a tractor up and kind of over a prune tree. That in it of itself would probably have been enough to get him fired, but it would also have been excused. Prunes aren’t worth a damn thing anymore, the tractor was fine (so far), everything could have been forgiven unless my boss realized he was drunk if he would have just walked away. Hell, even if my boss had realized he was drunk he probably would have forgiven it.He’s fired two people in his 25 years of being boss man, one of whom got in the face of his dad who had just had a stroke and the other one managed to spend 8 hours not mowing a yard, then call us up and say he needed some OT to finish. (I’m the boss’ personal go-getter, aka the company bitch). But no, this piece of intellectual brilliance decides that he was going to pull the tractor back down with his Tacoma. Why he didn’t just reverse the tractor off of the tree will forever confuse me, but I digress. He gets his baby Yota over to the tractor, takes a tow rope and hooks up to the front (the end that’s in the air) of the tractor, and left the tractor in gear. Anyone who’s ever tried to do anything knows exactly what’s happening next, which turned into a Tow Mater and sons experiment. He drops his truck into four wheel, hits the gas, andPuts the tractor on its ass. My boss and I come rolling around the corner as he was running from his truck back to his tractor. But even then, my boss didn’t fire him — the guy just quit from shame/embarrassment. The cocaine story has this one beat, but I can’t miss an opportunity to show some tractor tipping.EDIT: Since I’ve got a couple requests: during prune harvesting season we bring in a lot of outside labor contractors. As is common with most job sites, there’s no drinking or consumption of drugs or alcohol allowed during company time on company property. One of the guys, we’ll call him B, every day showed up to work like he’d just ate a bag of freakin’ coffee beans. He mellowed out all morning long, but he was weird, because after lunch he would be really low, but then he’d slam his ass in gear and be rolling along pretty well all afternoon. One day my boss and I decided I was going to learn the ropes from B (he was the best equipment operator we had) so I followed him everywhere. His morning pick-me-ups? Line of cocaine. He mellowed out throughout the day because he would hollow out and put joints inside of his apples that he would “eat” while in the machine, (the machine guys can’t see each other, so we had no idea he was lighting up). He told me the secret to this was putting them inside of a little ziploc baggie to keep them dry. For lunch, he would do another line of coke, then drink a frosty forty, pour another frosty forty in his water jug (we always assumed he brought the extra one from home and left it by his car full of ice so he could drink cold water in the afternoons without having to move). He’d discovered from years of practice I guess that the line of coke and frosty forty counter-act each other well enough that you don’t seem obviously drunk, but you don’t seem too enthused to be doing your job either.Needless to say, the boss man and I were pretty shocked. Nobody said anything because we needed to finish out the harvest, and as I said previously, this guy was a fantastic machine op, but we kept the harvest in house the following year.

I was a bit violent here, so I’ll not reveal my identity. But, some background first, I’m a buff male over 2 meters tall and back then I used to weight more than 100 kilograms. My weight is not composed of fat, it’s composed of muscle and generally I’m not someone you want to see yourself in a fight with, especially if you’re skinny/unarmed/not ready for a fight generally.I was with my mother in Paris, visiting her sister, or my aunt. We’re Irish and she lives there, because she’s married there.Unfortunately, we arrived far too early and my mother’s sister was not present just yet, we decided to eat in some Paris restaurant and I told my mother to go inside, order me whatever she orders for herself and I’ll be back, after I finish smoking my cigar. The waiter, a skinny dark-haired 19 year old boy refused to serve my Mom because she wanted to order in English, he refused service and when I entered the restaurant after my cigar, I heard him hurling insults at her, calling her a ‘Whore’, ‘English bitch’ and other insults. Unknown to him, and to everyone there, I am a certified French-English translator and I told him in English to serve the lady because she’s clearly not being impolite. He hurled insults at me too, calling me a ‘big fat ugly American’ (first time someone calls me an American). In that moment I grabbed him by his shirt and told him in French ‘I speak French too, maggot’. In that exact moment, he became pale and started sweating uncontrollably, he was not prepared for a fight and was afraid I could rip him apart, I simply told him in French ‘Call someone less of a bitch than you, and that can actually serve food’.It was my first time in Paris, and I would have never believed that Parisians would be so rude to foreigners. In other towns, the French were not only polite, but also helpful, but Parisiens (pardon my generalization) made me hate the city of Paris, and I hope I never visit that place again.

As many of you know, the process of acquiring a student visa (F-1 visa) to the United States is nerve-racking for Indian families. Having gone through four years of college, graduating with a good GPA along with multiple summer research stints/internships, then applying to several US universities at considerable expense, and finally being rewarded with an acceptance letter from a respected school, Indian students are sometimes rejected from entering the US at the final hurdle—the visa interview at the US embassy.I recall the buildup to my interview four years ago. Many of my friends had theirs scheduled before mine, and they scared the bejeezus out of me recounting their horror show interviews involving scores of questions from grim interviewers with piercing glares boring into their souls trying to catch out any hesitation in their answers, any possible untruths. My parents did what any self-respecting Indian family does before their kid heads to an interview—they took me to a temple. And not just any temple—they took me about 1000 kilometers north of home to the searingly hot city of Baroda, Gujarat, to visit one particular Hanumanji temple (apparently this was our family God in our family temple, goodness knows why, we’re Tamils from Chennai—and I’m an atheist!)So after much prayer and puja, blessings from family members and well-wishes from friends, I stood outside the US embassy on a cloudy, muggy, summer day, shitting my pants under the narrow canopy that automatically opened over the street when it rained (a nice touch there, ‘Murica). My stomach churned as the line slowly moved forward. My heart leaped into my mouth as I passed through the gates, only to be confronted by armed security guards who proceeded to take away anything I had in my pockets—pens, coins, paper, etc. Please don’t take my clothes too, please don’t take my clothes too, I prayed silently. The guard gestured at my jeans. Resigned to my fate, I started to unzip them.“What are you doing?” he asked, amazed. “Just take off your belt and pass through the scanner.”….Finally through the gates, I was taken aback at how simple the next room looked. Then I understood why—it was just a queue room. A room for this damn queue.Half an hour later we passed into the Interview Room. People lined up in front of about a dozen booths, each with a White Man or White Lady inside (must be the Americans, I thought fearfully, please let them understand my accent). The room was air-conditioned. I was sweating. It was large and airy. I gasped for breath. Now I was in front of one of the White Men. He beckoned me forward. He smiled at me evil— no, pleasantly — it was a pleasant smile!“Hi there, how’s your day going?”He greeted me — what do I do? Is this part of the interview? Oh no, I don’t have an answer. Smile. Smiling is good. He won’t hate you if you smile.I smiled. He waited.Oh shit, he asked you a question. Answer it, jackass!“OH IT IS—you’re too loud, dolt—going well”, I whispered. He didn’t hear that last bit, but he nodded as if he did.“May I have your I-20?”“Here it is,” I breathed. He stared down at it for a minute. Then—“So, you’re going to Purdue?”Say yes, don’t say yup. And don’t shout.“YUP!” I shouted.“Ok then, you’re good to go” he said, stamping my passport.“What?” I yelped, staring at him in disbelief.“You’re good to go, sir, your application has been accepted.”You mean after all that stress you didn’t ask me a single question? Not one? Why?? Are you crazy, man? I even lied about my day, it was shitty as hell, you should quiz me on it! Make me grovel for that visa, like the bastards I know you interviewers are!“Good luck with your PhD, Mr.Raman, and enjoy your stay in the United States of America.”“Thank you,” I replied, my throat catching.I was going to America courtesy this senile interviewer. Thank you Hanumanji!

You can rewire your brain! This is possible due to Neuroplasticity.Neuroplasticity refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses which are due to changes in behavior, environment and neural processes, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury To be honest, the brain is a dynamic entity undergoing changes all the time. As you read this innocent sentence, some neurons in your brain have fired and some synapses have become stronger. Voila! Your brain has been rewired a bit. But I am not talking about these sort of 'boring' changes which occur all the time. What if I told you, your actions can physically alter your brain? Some parts become larger than usual while some parts begin performing tasks they normally don't?László Polgár is the father of the famous "Polgár sisters": Judit, Susan and Sofia. He is an expert in chess and believed that "geniuses are made, not born". Before he had any children, he wrote a book entitled Bring Up Genius!, and sought a wife to help him carry out his experiment. He found one in Klara, a schoolteacher. He home-schooled their three daughters, primarily in chess, and all three went on to become strong players. Susan Polgar became the first female to earn the Grandmaster title.Because of her intense training, her brain had encoded chess board configurations and she was able to not only recognize these configurations but also what moves she had to do from there to win. Show her a random chess board setup that is infrequent her brain is just as slow as normal chess players. So what was happening? A scan of her brain activity showed she was using the part of the brain that recognizes faces to identify chess board configurations. This part of the brain is really developed in humans and face recognition is something humans are really good at. The hours of practice she had put in playing and studying chess had radically changed ho she used her brain to play it.Some of you might be thinking that it was because she got her training from childhood that she was able to become an expert and this fact is useless to someone older. Not really. Recent studies have shown although neuroplasticity declines it still can be made use of in older ages. The Sea Gypsies are a seafaring people who spend a great deal of their time in boats off the coast of Myanmar and Thailand, have unusual underwater vision -- twice as good as Europeans. This has enabled Mokens to gather shellfish at great depths without the aid of scuba gear. How do the Moken do this? They constrict their pupils by 22 percent. The brain orders the body to adapt to suite its needs. Another example of neuroplasticity has been found in London taxi drivers. A cab driver's hippocampus -- the part of the brain that holds spatial representation capacity -- is measurably larger than that of a bus driver. [from Neuroplasticity: You Can Teach An Old Brain New Tricks ]As children we have lots of free time and our brain is really quick to grasp new skills and ideas. To make signNow changes to the brain as grown ups one needs to exercise it regularly and focus on really specific tasks like learning to play the guitar or solve spatial puzzles. Because of the constraints of being social and other reasons, people miss out on this. It has been observed that spiritual leaders and prisoners of war have been able to develop extra-cognitive skills simply because of the immense amount of time they put in meditation, mental exercises and thought experiments. Plasticity can also be observed in the brains of bilinguals (Mechelli et al., 2004). It looks like learning a second language is associated with structural changes in the brain: the left inferior parietal cortex is larger in bilingual brains than in monolingual brains.I'll end with some interesting bits from The Brain that Changes ItselfLearning and brain exercises slow age-related mental declines. For example, education necessitates extra branches among neurons to accommodate the new information; new branching increases the volume and thickness of the brain that would otherwise decline with age.Physical exercise promotes the creation of new neurons in the brain. Yet another reason to start that walking program.Specifically designed brain exercises have been shown to improve brain function in children and adults with learning disabilities. The brain undergoes measurable, physical changes as we think. Computer technology can now use these measurements and changes to allow paralyzed people to moves objects with their thoughts.Researchers at UCSD have used imagination and illusion to restructure brain maps and ‘trick” the brain into managing phantom pain and some forms of chronic pain.Performance can be improved through visualization because action and imagination can activate the same parts of the brain. People have learned to play the piano or achieve greater results in athletic endeavors through mental practice. NOOOOOOO. You are talking to a military romance scammer. I received an email from the US Army that directly answers your question that is pasted below please keep reading.I believe you are the victim of a military Romance Scam whereas the person you are talking to is a foreign national posing as an American Soldier claiming to be stationed overseas on a peacekeeping mission. That's the key to the scam they always claim to be on a peacekeeping mission.Part of their scam is saying that they have no access to their money that their mission is highly dangerous. If your boyfriend girlfriend/future husband/wife is asking you to do the following or has exhibited this behavior, it is a most likely a scam:Moves to private messaging site immediately after meeting you on Facebook or SnapChat or Instagram or some dating or social media site. Often times they delete the site you met them on right after they asked you to move to a more private messaging siteProfesses love to you very quickly & seems to quote poems and song lyrics along with using their own sort of broken language, as they profess their love and devotion quickly. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for. They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy. The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I am just trying to show you examples that you are most likely being connned.Below is an email response I received after I sent an inquiry to the US government when I discovered I was scammed. I would consider myself eligible to answer this question. My parents are working and I have an elder sister who is 3 years elder to me. I was very good at grasping things fast. But, I was really bad at mugging up things and that's how it started. My dad used to teach me all the subjects except mathematics (As my mom is a mathematics teacher and my dad wasn't very good at it). I literally used to beg my mom to teach me.My dad has hit me with his leather belt, slippers, shoes, stick, steel scale for not being able to remember things. My mom burnt my thigh with a hot steel rod because I lied about something. I wasn't even 10 back then.I've had marks of being beaten up for days, even weeks at times. My sister was beaten up in front of our house by my dad because she went to a friend's house (whom she considered as her brother and my parents knew about it). He used to live just 200m away.We were not allowed to play in the streets until it's a power cut or we are done with our finals and waiting for our results.Once we were playing with the kids who lived in the same street, my dad had asked us to stop playing by 7pm and come back home. My sister went inside around 6:30pm as she was tired. I forgot about the time and I was locked outside as a punishment till 9pm. My mom was worried and checked on me from the window. She wanted to let me in but, my dad warned her not to.My parents were never impressed with my or my sister's academics. Even when we actually did something good, they never appreciated us.And how these things backfired us?We became introvert. We stopped meeting, talking to people and our parents love that.My sister is 25 now and I will be 23 in 2 months. But, we still have to ask everything from our dad. Even if we want to go to the shop nearby to buy bread. My sister earns now. But, my dad has complete power over her bank balance. Even if she has to buy a dress, she has to ask him.We don't share our problems with our dad anymore. Unless we need something financially. We haven't travelled alone ever. My parents got paranoid about me going to New Delhi for the coaching. They tried their best to convince me. But, I wanted to leave for good.My parents have given us every materialistic thing we have asked for. They seek our advice about everything. But, they couldn't give us non-materialistic things like love, care, understanding etc. We feel sometimes that it would've been better if they won't have given us those scars that are going to stay with us forever and hurt a little every time we think of those scars.Love,ShriyaP.S. - I have disabled comments because I was getting hate messages for my parents. I understand that their ways were wrong, they have been abusive but, that doesn't change the fact that they are my parents. They have given me a lot of things that I can't even put in words. I am writing here, on this post, because of them. So, please try to understand that and help other kids if they are going through this. I am past that phase and have a healthy relationship with my parents now.Thank you!
