I retired before the accident, and have not seen the movie.However, I do know that the situation was made immensely worse by pouring millions of gallons of seawater into the burning structure. This caused it to snap the crude pipeline at a much lower level, making it doubly difficult to shut off the spill since a new cap had to be manufactured.I doubt very much, or rather I would be astonished, if this fact featured strongly in the movie since it would not show the coastguard fire service in a very good light.Were I still employed by BP I would strongly urge the company to ignore any movie made on the subject and refrain from commenting. Rather, let history judge whether the Gulf ecology was as damaged as the media and damage litigants insist.I think BP reacted to the spill itself in the most honourable way, going above and beyond it responsibilities as owner. I am proud to have worked for such a company.

The Three Mile Island accident was a success.  Although the operators did all they could to mess up the situation, all radioactive material was contained and no one was hurt.  Melted fuel made it 7/8th of an inch through the 7 inch reactor vessel which is further contained by a three-foot, steel re-barred containment shield.  Essentially, there was no way that the nuclear material was going to be released into the environment.Chernobyl is another story, however it is also exaggerated.  Due to an inherently unsafe design (never been allowed in the U.S.), disabling safety systems, and the lack of a nuclear engineer on site, employees at Chernobyl reactor 4 made some grievous errors which resulted in a steam explosion within the reactor vessel.  Subsequently a graphite fire threw radioactive material into the atmosphere.  The UN report has found that 55 people died immediately or shortly thereafter (Fire fighters and plant workers) and a possible 4,000 cancers may have occurred.  These cancers are mainly thyroid cancer developed from Iodine-131.  Iodine-131 decayed quickly following the accident (8 days) and when it accumulates in people's thyroid, cancer tends to occur.  It also happens to be one of the most survivable cancers.There have been 11 deaths and 17 injuries so far in the Deep Horizon disaster and the full environmental impact is yet to be seen.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. They actually had to hit a 9-7/8" inch diameter hole, 3.5 miles down. Much harder than a 30" hole 2.5 miles down.The relief wells were drilled by the regular rig crews on the sister-ship semi-submersible drilling vessels Development Driller II and Development Driller III (DD2 and DD3), which are owned/manned by Transocean and have been leased/operated by BP for many years. Providing further assistance were the Discoverer Enterprise and Q4000 performing oil recovery/flowback/flaring, the Discoverer Inspiration which deployed the capping stack, and many other vessels. It was an enormous effort.Directional drilling to hit fairly small targets (within 10-100 ft) is perfectly routine in today's oil industry. The drilling Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) in a modern drilling string contains much more than a bit -- it has an entire integrated sensor package and remotely-steerable bit assembly. While drilling, you can tell how deep you are, what your angle from vertical is, and which direction you're going on a compass heading. Angle from vertical is pretty easy to measure, but depth must be corrected for pipe stretch, and compass heading must be corrected for the local warping of the Earth's magnetic field by the rock strata, as well as seasonal changes to the difference between magnetic north and grid north.The directional driller (who works for a company like Schlumberger or Halliburton) sends commands to the motor via pressure pulses in the drilling mud that's constantly being pumped through the drillpipe. Drilling isn't my expertise, but to my understanding the commands are as simple as "build angle from vertical," "drop angle to vertical," "turn to the left," and "turn to the right." Then the bit bends a little bit in the middle, and drills in a particular direction with a predictable radius of curvature. If you know where you are and where you're going, all you have to do is calculate a path between the two and send the commands to the BHA. To fine-tune the approach, BP used a "vector magnetometer" which is a wireline-conveyed surveying tool. It can detect the direction and distance of another well's casing through solid rock, by measuring the way the metal casing affects the emitted magnetic field. Then the final approach angle was tweaked so that the relief well intersected the original well between the final and intermediate casing strings, where the BHA didn't have to drill through steel pipe to kill the well. In the vacuum of space, a very dark liquid will be quickly heated by the sun to several hundred degrees resulting in the same boiling off of lighter hydrocarbons that is the basis of the refining process.I have not done the calculations, but the gravity of the oil, itself, will not be able to keep the escaping gases as an atmosphere. Every bit that boils away will reduce the total mass. I would expect that over a matter of days or weeks, all that would be left would be a sticky ball of molten tar-like material. If this residue was ten percent of the original volume, the diameter would be about 53 meters.

IMO Whatever BP has been ordered to pay it isn't enough. That they are appealing the settlement, is proof of how much they really care about the damage they have done.
