North Korea vs SomeoneAs a primary trigger point for war I dont see how they could start anything, but, if battle was to break out anywhere in the vicinity with an enemy of NK, I think they'd be quick to throw petrol onto the conflict. Attack South Korea - no way. An army marches on its stomach and while they could put up a massive initial attack, that would be all it was - they cannot sustain any major operation for any length of time, their supply lines would be cut instantly as soon as they went across the border. Any major agression from NK would likely be nuclear, and only as a result of South Korea being part of an alliance against a North Korean Ally. They are a one strike unit. Middle Eastern escalationMany different scenarios, but in order to pick the ones that have the ability to escalate, we'll pick the countries that are client states of major powers. SyriaPossible but unlikely. Assad is backed by Russia, and I dont understand why exactly the west doesn't just leave Assad alone. Yes he is an odious dictator, no question. Did he slaughter lots of people? Yes, probably, but that seems to be the way over there. So did Ariel Sharon. And he gets eulogised by Joe Biden. It depends on what team you are on there, but essentially removing Assad is replacing something of a functional country with a power vacuum. Power vacuums dont generally cause major wars, only civil ones. So it comes down to the backer nations - if they somehow get drawn in, then maybe, but again, they are too smart to show their faces, so I doubt this will extend beyond the borders. IranNo Chance. The current entente between Iran and the US was a done deal long before anything appeared in the papers about it. They dont want war, wont go to war and there is a very low chance that anyone will do anything stupid enough to cause war. Caveat - if a very staunch republican gets into the white house next time around the situation may change, but remember just because the administration changes, the top brass at the Pentagon doesn't, and they are smart enough to not want to go there. At the moment. Plus I dont think Iran is building nukes. Its for power. The UAE is building a nuclear power plant and Saudi has plans for 16. Iran has limited refinement locations for fossil fuels and years of sanctions have made a mess of the country - nuclear is a cheap alternative for power. IsraelLike them or not, Israel is interested in looking after one thing only: Israel. They wont be the agressors for a larger scale conflict, they cant sustain any operation against Iran, no matter how much they bluff about it - overfly rights, refuelling, the landmass of Iran etc. No way. Russia - Ukraine and EuropeThis is maybe the most likely source. The west has done nothing over Crimea because there wasn't much it could do. Russia is playing with a very strong hand here, Crimea was easy. Not a shot fired. Its what happens next that decides where we go. I think Russia want Donetsk and Kharkiv. I used to live in Donetsk and still have friends there I keep in touch with - they are over it, they say they are always the meat in the sandwich between Russia and Europe and many Ukranians just want to be left alone. They are however ethnically Russian, and a large proportion of the population is ethnically Russian there. If Russia can take these areas without bloodshed, then they will keep them, but this is where it comes to the crunch - no one knows what Russia will do, or how Nato will respond. Putin was pretty straight up when he said "I do not want to be welcomed into Sevastopol by a Nato led navy" ok, fair enough. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed.
