When we try to complain or report this behavior in patients, the answer is often an implication that it’s part of the job — which it most certainly is NOT — and having to fill out forms that basically ask why you were trying to hard to be a victim and get yourself attacked, and comments about how the patient or their visitor is stressed or upset. As if that would excuse me from lashing out. Or as if they wouldn’t face the law if they decided to act that way in public.Instead of being treated with gratitude and respect, nurses are frequently abused by patients and their visitors and face a culture where their management doesn’t defend them, where reporting that abuse is frowned upon and not followed up upon.Why do many nurses struggle to find express compassion?
