How can New York City maintain its reputation as "the city that never sleeps" when so very many of the stores, shops, sites, and museums close relatively early in the evening? It's much easier to stay out all night in Seoul than it is in NYC…
it’s due to trains running 24/7 , certain places still are open you just have to look or word of mouth to find them , many places in NYC stay open , it’s the mom & pop stores that usually close early

I'm thinking of heading to New York city by myself for a weekend. I want to be safe but I don't want to do the touristy things. I want to experience the best things that the people living there appreciate the most. How do I find out what that is?
One Weekend is quite a short time to experience the life of locals anywhere. Anyway, I will share my experience with you. I visited NY last year for ten days. I stayed in New Jersey, near Journal Square, with a friend. The following are what I did1. Use the subway to commute. It is used by the locals on a daily basis. Don't take cabs unless absolutely necessary, which is almost never. 2. Spend time relaxing at New Port, near the docks. It's a long stretch and gives a spectacular view of the New York skyline. If you are a photographer, you would love the location and even if you are not, you would still be able to get some nice shots. There is a track that you can use for a run/jog or just sit back on a bench sipping coffee. 3. Spend a day on foot, randomly going through the streets of Little Italy and Chinatown. Lots of restaurants with good food. You can buy souvenirs for friends and family; don't forget to bargain, a lot. There is a park (Columbus Park), occupied by old folks mostly, engulfed in their favorite past times like playing cards, musical iinstruments, etc.. 4. Rent a bike and go into the Central Park. You can spend more than a couple of hours there. 5. Try out the street food, bakeries, steakhouses, etc. I used to eat mostly from street vendors; some had quite delicious lamb over rice. 6. Take a walk from Herald Square to Times Square. There was one cathedral in that area which you can visit. Not exactly sure but it was near Herald square. If you still get time, you could visit the beach, the Met and other touristy places. Enjoy!
