I am freaking the fuck out. At least once per day since the inauguration I wonder at what point did the Jews in Nazi Germany pack their bags and leave before it was too late. I mean, the ones who saw the writing on the wall and were able to book their passage on a ship or travel to a safer country. At what point will this wall trump is ordering to be built (against the advisement of structural engineers, economists, and a majority of voters) be more for keeping us in rather than keeping “them” out? Should I wait until our water, food, and air is poisoned by all the roll backs on EPA and FDA regulations? Will I be persecuted for being an atheist now that the religious fanatics have taken over all three branches of government and no one in power seems to believe in separation of church and state? Already our freedom of speech is under attack. Will my anti-trump opinions written on Quora and Facebook or participation in the protest march provide cause to have me jailed for treason under a tyrant? Will my LGBTQ friends, my Muslim and Mexican neighbors be stripped of their rights and persecuted? How long will it be before our National Parks are closed and sold off to the highest bidder? I still haven't even seen the Grand Canyon! Soon our internet may be restricted so that the only “approved” websites will be allowed.When will the Republicans in power, who for years cried out against the supposed anti-constitutional measures of Barack Obama, stand up against the actual anti-constitutional proposals of Trump? I think the only constitutional amendment the GOP cares about is the right to bear arms. Everything else is up for sale. Our democracy has now been downgraded and the world doomsday clock has inched forward toward midnight. I don't feel safe. My neighbors don't feel safe.As I lie awake at night wondering why I no longer feel safe, I realize that it's because I have no place to go. I can't renounce my US citizenship without having another country who will allow me to emigrate. I am stuck here with virtually no transferable talents or wealth that will enable me to move to Canada or any other country. I can empathize with refugees fleeing Syria and other war-torn countries because in just a few short years (or sooner) it will be Americans who are fleeing from tyranny. The only difference is that I still have clean water and air for now. Many of our US cities don't even have that. And from everything that I've seen and heard, Donald Trump is an unapologetic dictator who only wants to be president to line his own pockets. The corruption is real, flagrant, and on display for anyone to witness. Our government is passing laws to protect his power, not limit it. We all know what happens to authoritarians with unlimited power… the citizens get fucked.
