Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Sleep for 7 hours. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy. Play more games. Read more books than you did the previous year. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6. Dream more while you are awake. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. Drink plenty of water. Smile and laugh more. Don’t waste your precious energy or time on gossip. Forget issues of the past. They’ll just ruin your present happiness. Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone, so don’t even try. Don’t take yourself so seriously. You don’t have to win every argument. Just agree to disagree. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about. Don’t compare your partner with others either. What other people think of you is none of your business. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. Call your family often. Your inner most is always happy. So be happy. Each day give something good to others.

When I worked as a 9-1-1 operator there was a line of questioning developed to determine the priority of the call. These calls usually originated in a certain part of the city and the person calling usually reported a Black or Latino person acting "suspiciously."  Well 9-1-1 operators wanted to catch the bad guys, too. So we would try to determine what the "suspicious" behavior was. Was the person looking into car windows? House windows? Were they walking down the street?  They would report a Black or Latino male who was walking down the street or sitting in his car eating lunch. We erred on the safe side and would put out an information only call. Officers are aware of crime trends in the area and if an area has been experiencing a higher number of vehicle or house burglaries, then the information broadcast might be useful to the car that is patrolling that area.  One night a woman called from the West side of the city,  frantic because she heard a noise on the side of her house. There was a car nearby and we sent on a possible prowler at the location, no suspect description. We told her the police were on the way and to call back if she had a description.  She called back. "I have a description!" "Yes Ma'am, is the suspect Black, White, Latino or Asian?"  "They're two of them, and... and they are Black!"  "What color shirt and pants are they wearing?"  "They're both wearing dark clothing! Where are the police! Oh my God!!! They are on the side of my house looking around!  Get the police out here now! Hello? Hello?" "Unit at ____ the P/R is on the line. She describes the suspects as two male Blacks wearing dark clothing on the side of the house right now." "Control, that's us. The P/R is describing us. We're two Black officers. We're wearing dark clothing, our uniform. Tell the P/R to open the door and come out and talk to us. The noise she's reporting is a tree branch." The operators had it easy, it's a tougher call for an officer. Err on the side of safety and treat people respectfully and hope that situation turns out okay for everyone. My motto, everyone gets to go home.

Some have been stated beforeThe only ONE thing that would do the most is to toss all the elected officials out, don’t allow them to run again, and elect people whose only agenda is to run a sane and fiscally responsible government. But that won’t happenThe objective is to take away the financial incentives that elected officials have foisted on the public and to make the press and candidates accountable to the truth.term limits - no more than 2 consecutive terms for any senator or congressman- They could be re-elected after being out of office for one term. We need representatives that know how the laws work and which are needed. We don’t need people who know how the system works and who have learned to work the systemdo not allow pork-barrelling (I’ll vote for your bill if you add this)Get rid of their high salary and their health care and retirement perks. They should not be more entitled that Joe Public to special treatment. They should live with the laws they pass and their earnings as elected officials would do no more for them than the earnings of Joe Public does for him. No paid offices, no paid staff, no bodyguards after they leave office. No new spending without having a way to spend itoverhaul the tax systemHave them submit to the same type of scrutiny that they put Kavanaugh through. If at a later time it is found out they lied, then they automatically get terminated.Make it illegal for them or their family to accept any gifts or loans from anyone with political interests. Not even a paid for meal or as a speaker to their event. Automatic termination for the smallest violation.Make it illegal for them to take a job as a lobbyist until 5 years after they leave office.Make laws requiring the press to tell the truth without ignoring some of the facts. If they are found to have “spun” the news, fine the news organization and suspend the reporter or talking head for one month without pay. Also, charge them for free airtime for candidates to present their platform which would accrue until election year. That time and fine and pay would all be used to fund the campaign time.get rid of political campaigns. Each candidate would get the same number of free airtime to present their case and answer questions posed by opponents. This would be paid for by the fines and penalties against news networks and advertisers just like any other TV or Radio show. Everything would be fact-checked and liars and exaggerators would be called out and be disqualified. There would have to be a system in place so that not everyone who thought they were capable could run. Maybe an initial test on whether they understood the law? And so many signatures? That would be the biggest challenge. Or to have each political party decide which candidate to run. And independent could run with enough signatures.Candidates would have to present the full truth on their literature and websites. They would have to accurately reveal the problems with their opponent's platform.when a candidate makes a promise before an election, they would put a time frame on it. If they do not accomplish it in that time frame, they step down regardless of office. This would prevent them from making promises to get votes and would let voters know when to expect the results. The candidate should be able take opposition into account when making those promises. Candidates should tell how they intend to prevent the promises of one another.

I can completely relate to User’s answer, I am also more or less in the same situation, my parents sent me to Australia when I was a teenager for education purposes while they worked their arse off back home, now, my parents back then were typically lower middle class and strict Christian parents.Religion, My parents are both born again Christian and I was born Christian, I was baptised, went to church twice a week, I was indoctrinated to believe in God and to follow his teachings blindly, and after I turned 17 I realised how silly religion is, and became an atheist. Up until now I still struggle with my parents and I have some problems whenever this particular issue is brought up.There was no affection shown in my family, any typical Asian can attest that it’s not very common to see Asian parents show affection to each other or to the kids, I’ve never heard my parents say “I love you”, hug, kiss or hold hands. My parents almost never complimented me on anything, at most it was just “not bad, keep it up” and I never got a Christmas presents from them. This is just a little thing but I realised how this thing affected me as a person. No idea how to help in terms of handling paperwork, I had to handle all my own paperwork from school application, applying for my residency, visa, handle my own taxes, etc etc since I was a teenager.Sex education. It’s generally taboo to talk about sex openly in Asian household, my parents never taught me the importance of safe sex, contraception, STDs, etc, now that I think about it, it was quite risky to send their kid to a foreign country with the kid being clueless about sex. But thankfully I was able to learn on my own and not putting myself in a dangerous situation.Dating/marrying someone who’s not from my own race. They never understood this particular issue, they always thought that it’s always simpler and easier to have courtship with a person from a similar culture background, but they just didn’t realise that I involved culturally as well when they sent me abroad, so I wouldn’t say my culture is strictly all Asian. So, when they found out that I’m dating/marrying a white person, they were shocked and we had a bit of a rough patch but we managed to overcome it, and today my parents are very fond of my fiancée, like any other Asian parents, their love to my fiancée can be measured by how much food they are feeding her when we visit them.I was expected to survive on my own. Just like a baby bird being released from the nest for the first time, I was expected to be self reliant, they were not rich, they had to sell lots of things, I was given money for only limited amount of time and I had to support myself for the rest. But these things I’ve mentioned above are trivial, the thing that affected me the most was to see their hard work and support. The first time I ever understood the concept of “you have no idea how to appreciate what you have until you know how hard it is to earn one” was because of my parents, no matter how hard it was for me, they were always being supportive, as long as I was willing to do it wholeheartedly and not stop.Despite all the flaws and how clueless they were, they bent over backwards just to make sure I had something to eat, to make sure I could live another day. And for that, I am infinitely grateful and I wouldn’t change anything from my parents even if I had the chance, for me, they are perfect in every conceivable way.

Not for me it doesn’t and let’s be honest here, what does the freedom of movement actually enable? The basic premise is it allows folk in countries within the EU to up sticks and go to any other country within the EU - no questions asked (more or less). The upshot being, anyone can go where they please and legitimately claim the same as those who were born, have lived, earned and paid taxes in the target country. That’s the nuts and bolts of it in 4 lines. As you can imagine, the freedom of movement policy has meant the UK has flourished in certain sectors because we have been able to recruit intelligent and hardworking individuals that, perhaps, were denied the chance to progress in their own country. It has also meant we have taken in an inordinate amount of lazy, free-loading loafers who; contribute nothing to the country other than being a drain on the economy, who commit crimes and ultimately, treat the UK and its denizens with utter contempt. What’s going to change when we leave the EU? Well, let me tell you a story:I work all over the world in North/South America, Asia and the Middle East and have to fill out a visa form for almost every country I work in. Do I kick up a fuss about it? Do I scream blue murder at the inconvenience of having to fill out - yet more - paperwork? Do I blame the establishments concerned for employing unnecessarily bureaucratic measures? No.I take the 5 minutes it takes to fill the form out and submit it. Sometimes, I have to send it to or go with my passport to the Embassy. Do I care? Not in the slightest and do you know why I don’t care?Because these measures are in place to protect the welfare of the country I’m visiting. The UK moving out of the EU puts a stop to the freedom of movement. We don't enjoy it anywhere else in the world and yet, it doesn’t prevent us from travelling, working or emigrating to those places. That is exactly how it should be and how the UK will be once we leave.Yes, we will have to apply for a visa to enter European countries. We will lose the obvious benefit of being able to easily recruit genuine candidates to come and work here without the need for said visas - but are those really valid issues or insurmountable obstacles? Nope, because if a candidate is good enough and credible, they’ll get in and we’ll welcome them.By taking back control of our borders we prevent the undesirables from coming in and taking the piss, and that far, far outweighs any potential negatives. So, in answer to your question; do I care about losing my freedom of movement in the EU?No, I welcome it because, with respect to public and economic welfare, it’s the most responsible decision we’ve ever made.

I was actually roommates with someone in College whose parents decided to have him “off-grid”. Let me just say this: Stop even entertaining the idea of having a baby off-grid. It really makes your child’s life unnecessarily hard and your kid will forever resent you for putting that pain on them.I’ll get into the details in a moment, but first let me address the question proposed above. Yes, technically speaking it is not a crime to have your baby off-the-grid in the U.S.A. However, a lot of details surrounding the event would be illegal. First of all, any licensed midwife or doctor is required by law to file a birth certificate or they actually risk losing their license and getting a misdemeanor. If you forced them or threatened them to not file the birth certificate that would make you a likely accomplice and would not go over well with the authorities. But let’s ignore that for a moment and just assume you know how to birth a child on your own and can do it in your basement without any professional medical physician there to oversee you (which would be the only way you could pull this off). In this case you wouldn’t get thrown in jail for failing to get a birth certificate and no crime would have been committed. However you just set up a very difficult life for your child. These are some of the things I was told from by my roommate who didn’t have a social security number until he was 20 years old.No, he could not get a (legal) jobQuite literally he didn’t qualify to get even a job at McDonalds. If you remember the last job you got no matter how prestigious or demeaning it was, you had to fill out a bunch of paperwork. Most of these forms require you to have a SSN (social security number) to properly fill them out. However the important one is the form labeled I-9. This form is required to be submitted by every employer after hiring a new employee. This form serves only one purpose, to determine that you are eligible to work in the United States. Your child (and my roommate) would not be able to complete this form which every employer must get filled out before starting employment with a new employee. Your child will not be able to get a job because of this.Yes, he can evade paying taxes.Okay, so this sounds like a perk I guess. But my roommate did not have to pay taxes. The government basically didn’t know he existed, so they never knew he was not paying. But then again he didn’t have a job. So would you rather have a job and pay some taxes or not ever be able to work except under the table for below minimum wage? Given that choice, taxes sound pretty awesome! Keep in mind that this also means your child is not eligible for any tax benefits or credits such as those that students get while going to college. No, You as the parent can not claim him as a dependent on your taxesYou’re already dealing with a child, wouldn’t it be great to get that child tax credit? Every year you'll basically be paying out of pocket for deciding not to get them a SSN.Yes, he can attend public school through 12th gradeHe would be able to attend school through high school without a social security number. No, he can not attend collegeWhile high school and lower education is okay, your child will never be able to attend collegeYes, he can go to the doctorThe doctor will still see your child and provide him his shots. However…No, he will not be covered under your family insurance (or qualify for Medicare/Medicaid)So you’ll need to plan on paying for all doctor appointments out of pocket. No, he can not travel abroad (even to Canada)You’d best hope none of your child’s friends decide to go to Cancun for spring break. Your child will not be eligible to leave the country or return to the US if he manages to leave (unless he plans to climb Trump’s wall)No, he will not be able to drive a carOkay, well nothing is stopping him from physically driving a car, but he would not be able to get a driver’s license and thus, can not LEGALLY drive. Hope he doesn’t get pulled over. No, he will not be able to voteOnce old enough he will not be able to register to vote.Yes, he can avoid the draftWell the good news is that like taxes, he can skirt the requirement to join the draft when he turns 18.No, he can’t get a loanThis means no credit cards, no car loan, no home, nothing. I’m sure plenty of people will claim these are all evil anyway, but these have powerful impacts on someone’s life. There might be times he needs it. (and when used properly none of these are bad things). No, he will not have a credit scoreThis goes with the above one, but he will not be able to work on this which affects your entire life/future. This also will disqualify him from renting most homes or apartments he is looking at.Basically your child will be treated as an illegal immigrant. Why put them through this when they are entitled to the benefits that the United States provides its citizens? There are people in other countries dying to get what your child is entitled to and you are (considering) denying your child those abilities? It just doesn’t make sense.Get them a SSN and if your child decides at 20 that he wants to live off-the-grid than he can burn his Social Security Card and go in the woods and hide from the government. But don’t be selfish enough to make that decision for them.My roommate resents his parents for not giving him a SSN. While all his friends in high school were driving, he couldn’t. While his friends go to Cancun for spring break, he had golden handcuffs in the U.S. and can’t leave. And worst of all he said was that while all his friends were earning money from jobs in high school, he couldn’t get a job.The job part was the hardest for him. He couldn’t leave the house or move out when he turned 18. He was stuck at home.Him working on getting a social security number was difficult and took him two years. He started when he turned 18 to get one once he realized he couldn’t go to college, he couldn’t get a job, he couldn’t rent an apartment, and thus will never really be able to be independent from his parents. It took two years and then at 20 he was able to get one and start working and going to school. He forever resented his parents. Don’t be those parents…

We had a guy show up drunk to work and run a tractor up and kind of over a prune tree. That in it of itself would probably have been enough to get him fired, but it would also have been excused. Prunes aren’t worth a damn thing anymore, the tractor was fine (so far), everything could have been forgiven unless my boss realized he was drunk if he would have just walked away. Hell, even if my boss had realized he was drunk he probably would have forgiven it.He’s fired two people in his 25 years of being boss man, one of whom got in the face of his dad who had just had a stroke and the other one managed to spend 8 hours not mowing a yard, then call us up and say he needed some OT to finish. (I’m the boss’ personal go-getter, aka the company bitch). But no, this piece of intellectual brilliance decides that he was going to pull the tractor back down with his Tacoma. Why he didn’t just reverse the tractor off of the tree will forever confuse me, but I digress. He gets his baby Yota over to the tractor, takes a tow rope and hooks up to the front (the end that’s in the air) of the tractor, and left the tractor in gear. Anyone who’s ever tried to do anything knows exactly what’s happening next, which turned into a Tow Mater and sons experiment. He drops his truck into four wheel, hits the gas, andPuts the tractor on its ass. My boss and I come rolling around the corner as he was running from his truck back to his tractor. But even then, my boss didn’t fire him — the guy just quit from shame/embarrassment. The cocaine story has this one beat, but I can’t miss an opportunity to show some tractor tipping.EDIT: Since I’ve got a couple requests: during prune harvesting season we bring in a lot of outside labor contractors. As is common with most job sites, there’s no drinking or consumption of drugs or alcohol allowed during company time on company property. One of the guys, we’ll call him B, every day showed up to work like he’d just ate a bag of freakin’ coffee beans. He mellowed out all morning long, but he was weird, because after lunch he would be really low, but then he’d slam his ass in gear and be rolling along pretty well all afternoon. One day my boss and I decided I was going to learn the ropes from B (he was the best equipment operator we had) so I followed him everywhere. His morning pick-me-ups? Line of cocaine. He mellowed out throughout the day because he would hollow out and put joints inside of his apples that he would “eat” while in the machine, (the machine guys can’t see each other, so we had no idea he was lighting up). He told me the secret to this was putting them inside of a little ziploc baggie to keep them dry. For lunch, he would do another line of coke, then drink a frosty forty, pour another frosty forty in his water jug (we always assumed he brought the extra one from home and left it by his car full of ice so he could drink cold water in the afternoons without having to move). He’d discovered from years of practice I guess that the line of coke and frosty forty counter-act each other well enough that you don’t seem obviously drunk, but you don’t seem too enthused to be doing your job either.Needless to say, the boss man and I were pretty shocked. Nobody said anything because we needed to finish out the harvest, and as I said previously, this guy was a fantastic machine op, but we kept the harvest in house the following year.

Am I the only combat medic to answer this so far?Yes you can. Medics are taught how to but not instructed to. There is a terrible and fine line out there in “the suck” that medics, and medics alone, are asked to walk. You don’t end a person’s life. Full stop. In the rare case that a soldier is mortally wounded (no way to maintain an airway or control bleeding and no higher medical assets within a reasonable time)… then a medic could administer an extra ampule of or two. Even though the doctors and instructors teach the medics this, in the end it’s on that one person’s shoulders. And conscience. Is it better to leave your friend/co-worker screaming in agony until they are too weak to yell? Then watch them convulse every few minutes for a couple of hours. Then finally they stop responding to your voice or even painful stimulus.Brain death is setting in. It takes a few minutes or a few days.Every minute you have a seriously wounded soldier in your unit you have medics that are out of the fight. You also have a much more complicated command situation. Nobody (NOBODY) makes this decision lightly. They also never talk about it.In the movies there is always an EVAC helicopter with escort available and ready to risk anything to get to the wounded. In combat it’s not always possible. “Birds” get grounded for many reasons and MEDEVAC Strykers are delayed by the need for escort vehicles/crews and IED laden roads. In almost all cases, the wounded will live to see the operating room. In some form.Combat wounded are intense. Gunfire is still raging in many cases. People are yelling, confusion is everywhere. The medic will be well trained but under a lot of stress. They know that they have to address breathing and bleeding in 2–3 minutes. They also need to avoid causing further injury and find any hidden wounds. While doing this they have to coordinate any available soldiers with combat lifesaver training to assist them with this or other injured. Finally, they also have to constantly keep the command apprised of the situation.Who has X injury? Can they return to the fight?Do they need to be evacuated from battle or can we take them with us?If they need to go NOW, how long do they realistically have? Can we ground evac through the combat or do we need a bird? While answering all of that the medic has assessed the wounded. Tried to control the bleeding and established a secure airway. Then they need to find a vein for an IV (super hard on a patient with blood loss or missing limbs). While doing this they also need to fill out the ‘9 Line’ medical evacuation form for the radio. Once this is done the medic will check the field dressings, the IV, the breathing. Record the wounds and vitals. Mark when/if was given (how much, when, where administered) and done so that the surgeon can see it and blood doesn’t wash it away. Often in black sharpie on the forehead if patient is unconscious- as awful as that sounds it works well. So, don’t talk about the morality of this until you walk a mile (or 26) in a medic’s boots. Don’t talk about what happens until you live and work with a small team of men and women in a combat zone for over a year at a time. Infantry units are closer than most marriages/families. Your platoon SGT is dad and doc is mom. It’s a horrific moment to see one of your guys literally torn in half and dying. It’s much worse to know that due to a sandstorm there aren’t any flights that day. It’s hell on earth when you realize nobody is coming by road because of the IED you just hit. It’s unimaginable when you realize you only have 2 ampules left and 3 critically wounded friends.I didn’t have to make the hardest choice. I wouldn’t tell you if I did. I sure as &$*# wouldn’t take any judgement from you in any case.Great question. I hope someone who actually held this responsibility in combat can clear it up a little.
