In other words, certain physical processes (such as perpetual motion) are impossible, ruled out by the laws of physics, and the concept of energy is one way we have of keeping track of which types of physical processes are possible and which are not. As regards what we call the energy crisis, the fact is that our industrial society depends on carrying out activities and processes that depend on our having access to certain raw materials and processes (fossil fuels, sunlight, wind, falling water, geothermal heat, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion etc.) and since our current dominant source of such materials/processes are fossil fuels, which are both finite and potentially dangerous in terms of their effects on the environment (global warming and ocean acidification), there is a need to increase the efficiency and decrease the costs of alternative, safer and renewable methods of allowing us to carry out those essential activities and processes. Of course, all of this is much easier to state as “we need to find alternative, safer sources of energy, which aren't going to run out in the not too distant future”.
