A stronger communicator sounds more confident, more professional.Finding internshipsKeep an eye open for internship opportunities. I got lucky enough that the state departments had partnered with my school district to offer internships to computer science students.Don't give up if you don't get accepted the first time. Keep applying and you'll eventually find someone to accept you.How to stand out at interviewsBe yourself. This sounds cliché I'm sure, but it's pretty obvious. If you act like yourself, you'll appear more comfortable, which in turn makes you seem more confident.Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know what you're good at and where you lack. Don't focus on just what you want, but any strength relating to the job. Be willing to admit your weaknesses, but don't focus on them. You want to appear honest, not negative.Be honest. People may tell you to exaggerate your strengths, but don't make claims you can't live up to. A person who's honest is considered more trustworthy than someone caught in a lie, for obvious reasons.Stay humble. Talk about your accomplishments, for sure but in the sense of how they show skills that the people hiring you can benefit from, not putting yourself on a pedestal.Be confident. You strike a greater impression with your interviewer if you sound like you know what you are talking about, which you should. Be professional. This basically wraps up the last three things in one. Be someone who can be counted on, who is worth respecting.Understand that you might not get the position you desire, especially at first. At my first internship I had to collect the latest versions of 300+ documents and upload them to SharePoint with tags and such to allow filtering them. It was long, tedious work. At my second and current internship, I was hired to research how the department could benefit from ideas presented in social media. Then I did research on the difference between IIS and Node.js. It was only because my manager hadn't had time to read either report that I was able to spend time with the other developers and help with JavaScript programming. Eventually I found myself working full-time with those developers, which was what I had wanted to do in the first place. So remember that accepting an internship with something you don't necessarily like could lead to an even better opportunity.Whatever position you get, don't neglect your work on that to try to get ahead. Do the best work you can on whatever you are assigned. A good work ethic is more important than getting ahead.
