Most of us are shocked and saddened by how so many people take a sensational magazine expose at face value.Reitman paints a connection between the disgusting frat boys of Dartmouth and the financial elite who have ruined our country and are poised to ruin it again.  After reading the article, you wouldn't imagine that 50% of students don't join a fraternity, that there are multiple coed fraternities, or even that half the students are women.  As far as the article is concerned, the Dartmouth Student is an animal that can be boiled down to a few pithy stereotypes (white, preppy, male) and some really juicy anecdotes.This is not an accurate portrayal of the average Dartmouth student.Our experiences at Dartmouth varied widely.  I know alumni who never stepped foot in a frat and others who never joined a Greek house.  I know many Greek-affiliated alumni who loved freshman trips, loved Dartmouth, never swam in kiddie pools, and never felt hazed.  Many of my friends have gone on to work jobs with decidedly net-positive societal impacts, like nonprofits and NGOs.In short, most Dartmouth alumns following the debacle are mad that Reitman attempted to defile our school and four of the best years of our lives.  It's unfair to the vast majority of us who worked hard, had fun, and are proud of the community we contributed to at Dartmouth.Lucy Pollard wrote a great opinion piece about all the different things students do, and how Reitman's caricature of a Dartmouth student is not broadly applicable.http://thedartmouth.com/2012/03/...Frank Santo expesses a similar sentiment, but also points out Reitman's agenda and just *why* this story has gained traction while misrepresenting the school.http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs...

Dartmouth is more in a league of its own. It is comparable both to other Ivies and to liberal arts colleges like Williams and Amherst. What sets Dartmouth apart the most is that you can have a great liberal arts education that also allows you to deeply focus on a subject of your choosing. Thus, a Dartmouth engineer will also have a broad knowledge of the arts, history, classics etc. However, unlike Amherst and Williams, Dartmouth also has some great resources for undergrads through the highly ranked graduate schools (Tuck, Thayer, and Geisel). In fact, finding research internships in your first year is really easy and common. Also, compared to the other Ivies, all classes at Dartmouth are taught by professors which is why Dartmouth’s undergraduate education is so strong and revered. Professors here are both teachers and researchers and thus are able to incorporate their research into classes which makes every class here feel really authentic and special.Dartmouth is in Hanover, New Hampshire. This creates a very different environment, both socially and academically. Daniel Webster, a Dartmouth alumnus said:“Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.” - Daniel Websterabout how the environment of the mountainous New Hampshire region differs from literally everywhere :) However, this is one of the school’s strengths because it provides great resources for outdoors activities (like skiing, kayaking etc.) but also allows us to actually use nature as a classroom. For example, just yesterday, we performed some experiments on squirrels for my bio class in the surrounding forests. Furthermore, you have no city to escape to (aside from Boston and NYC which are popular weekend destinations), which means that you are on campus. This makes you want to participate in a lot of the on campus activities. Our location is the primary reason for why Dartmouth has such a strong alumni network and an extremely high alumni satisfaction (2nd to Princeton), which also presents itself as a great professional resource for a lot of students.You can't really compare Dartmouth to the other Ivies because Dartmouth really doesn't fit to how the rest of the Ivies are structured. Most of them focus on graduate education rather than undergraduate education (the only exceptions being Brown and Princeton) and do not empower the students. Thus, I’d say that Dartmouth is a perfect blend of an Ivy and a liberal arts college. In terms of reputation, Dartmouth historically comes behind HYP (Harvard, Yale, Princeton), but also provides a much better undergraduate education. I would definitely recommend you to visit campus, and if possible, spend a couple of days on campus, to see what Dartmouth is like.*Edit* I totally mentioned how our geographical semi-isolation has also been an incubator for creating tradition and a cultish school spirit. We send incoming freshmen of into the wilderness for four days, run around bonfires as tall as buildings and jump into frozen ponds, just to name a few. Just thinking that these events have been going on for about a century, and knowing that these traditions will go on for centuries to come, creates a strong connection to the College and immediately makes Dartmouth feel like home.

At the outbreak of war the senior cadets and most of the staff at the Royal Military Academy were mobilised for active service. The facilities at Sandhurst were used to host an Infantry Officer Cadet Training Unit until mid 1942 when the Royal Armoured Corps Officer Cadet Training Unit took over.The Royal Air Force College was closed just before the outbreak of war. First of all, the weighted GPA doesn’t matter. Nobody looks at them. 3.81 GPA is typically low for a Dartmouth College applicant. However, there are people with those GPA that gets in. I had a 3.95 GPA and been waitlisted by Dartmouth. It definitely isn’t good enough, but they won’t just reject you looking at the GPA. They look at the whole application. Maybe other area of your application is very strong and you get in. Who knows, especially with sub-par GPA, your acceptance will be very subjective.

If you take advantage, it can be a pretty amazing experience. One of the major things about Dartmouth’s quarter system is Sophomore Summer, which is a policy that requires* all students who just completed their second year to be on campus for the summer.A major factor for Sophomore Summer the fact that only your respective class is on campus. This means that you are able to bond much more with your respective class, and have access to resources and faculty who would be more occupied during the regular year. Many departments do lower their offerings and activity during the summer, but because a little over a thousand students remain on campus every year, interesting classes and research opportunities are more than available to the sophomore class.It’s common for students to try and organize their D-Plan** in a way that lets them take a lighter course load over the summer, so that they can take advantage of the “Camp Dartmouth” atmosphere campus takes. New Hampshire during the summer is beautiful, and Dartmouth students take advantage of this. The Dartmouth Outing Club, the largest student-run organization on campus, is highly active over the summer. You can go hiking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, and any other summer outdoor activity you could think of for a fraction of the cost elsewhere. The Green*** is always abuzz with activity, from students studying to people playing sports.Greek life plays a larger than average roll during Sophomore Summer, a reality that some students and the College are trying to change. The summer is an excellent time to delve into clubs and activities that you otherwise might not have engaged in; the decreased number of students on campus means that positions in student government, dance groups, a capella, etc. are open to new recruits.As much as it is played up, Sophomore Summer really is just another term. It can be a very fun term, and is definitely the most unique of the four during the year, but it is not a massive party (you’re still taking classes after all), but it isn’t frustrating to be missing sophomore internship opportunities while you’re in the woods either. The whole point of the time is that you’re expected to be gone during some other time of year (most likely the winter).
