This is the posture that will allow you to best balance when coping with the movement of a horse, and there is a LOT of movement.Speaking of the horse, one talks to the horse with your body. Horses speak TOUCH. A horse is so sensitive to touch that it can feel the legs of a fly land on it. An animal that sensitive, may understandably consider your attempts at contact to be assault if you are not gentle. Everything you do, means something to them in their language. While there is a saddle and a bridle to help you, you should refrain from any kicking or pulling, and only send touch signals that you understand and are doing deliberately. That is why instruction is so important. Horses are not motorcycles or appliances, they feel everything, including our moods. In addition, they have real personalities and moods of their own. When you are riding a horse, you are having a conversation where you are requesting and negotiating to get the responses you want. As a beginning rider, it is all about proper positioning of your body, and learning to absorb and roll with all of the horse’s movement as a passenger. As one becomes better, one learns to direct the horses movement. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. Training a horse to do anything is all about habituation. You expose the horse to whatever you want to train it to ignore or not be rattled by repeatedly until you get the desired result.Bear in mind that not all horses can be habituated to all things — naturally nervous, high-strung individuals will never be able to stand like a rock while shooting from their back. They just don’t have it in them to bear loud noises orginated from their backs. Don’t blame the horse for this.NEVER PUNISH YOUR HORSE FOR FLINCHING OR SHYING DURING THIS PROCESS. You’re habituating him to a loud, frightening noise that is not natural, and punishing him for trying to get away from the sound will only reinforce in his mind that it is something to avoid. Speak calming and soothingly to your horse during the gunfire, let him know that you’re in his corner for this scary experience, and that you won’t let anything happen to him. Pet him and stroke him during the gunshots. Let him smell the air and inspect the person who is the shooter. Let him get used to the smell of gunfire. Patience, kindness and a low-key response is the key to getting a horse used to gunfire.The best way to train a horse to stand for gunfire is to start by leading the horse around while gunfire is going on in the distance. When the horse stops startling at the gunfire, saddle it and ride it with the distant gunfire.When your horse is accustomed to the distant gunfire under saddle as well as on the ground, bring the gunfire closer. You could try firing across the horse’s back until he no longer shies, then move to saddle shooting. That could get him habituated to the sound of gunfire from the vicinity of his back.I don’t know why you want a horse you can shoot from — that’s your business. But if you’re patient, calm, soothing, and proceed in a low key manner, you’ll end up with a horse you can at least shoot around, if not from.Good luck.

Yes, I did learn without taking formal horse back riding lessons.I started learning on a little pony, then moved to a old mare. I learnt in the country side. I started with walking and trotting. The pony was, I believe, not really trained. Maybe green. But I didn’t know it back then. So it was bucking and I fell a lot, but it was small, so the falls were not dramatic. I first galloped with that pony, on my own, all alone, when I felt ready for it. I made up obstacles with wood and straw. I jumped 70cm with that pony, which is quite a lot considering her size. Then I started to ride a mare, and I was free to ride big distances. I first rode bareback in the open, and galloped with her. I started getting bitless too. I rode on a beach on my own too. I was a young teenager and took initiatives. When I felt I was ready for something, I tried it and I learnt a lot. Later, I took riding lessons, but I learnt how to ride and basics on my own. I had more confidence than others and could deal with difficult situations with less stress.Here is the pony I rode as I was youngNow I cannot give an exact tutorial on how I learnt. I was experiencing, I was in total liberty, no adults around to freak out and over protect me. They trust me, let me go out with the horses and have fun. I didn’t have any plan to learn, I just wanted to have fun. Probably I took risks a few times, but eh, I never got hurt, and most importantly, I never got my horse injured.
