I came across a loophole in the library where I studied by pure accident. I used to go there to study and to also print out the lecture notes which were on average 40 pages long and the print was .10$ for each page. So basically i paid 4$ for each lecture i printed. This was a costly exercise for me and i spent on average 30$ each week for printing.The way it worked was, I had a library card and I recharged it as needed using the recharge machine. The recharge machine was about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. You had to insert the card, it would read it and then prompt you to insert the cash you wanted to recharge. Once that was done, you went to the print station, swiped your card on the card reader and then selected your file to print. Pretty basic stuff.One day I gave a few print jobs to the printer and went to the print station and swiped my card. I had to print 2 files of around 30 pages each. I had a credit of 3.70$ on my card. So I decided to print one file and then proceeded to the signNowarge machine to recharge the card while my file was printing. Keep in mind that the recharge machine and the print station were next to each other. Since my file was printing, I inserted my card into the recharge machine, it read my card and gave an error saying that the card is locked. I realized immediately that my card is currently being used by the printer and thus I am unable to use the card at 2 places at once. So I waited for the print to complete and then recharged my card to a value of 5$. So keep in mind I had 3.70$ initially, I printed 30 Pages, My credit should have dropped to .70$ and then recharged 5$ bringing the total to 5.70$. I did all the maths myself before proceeding to the print station and swiping my card. As I swiped my card, it showed me the current balance as 8.70$ instead of 5.70$ meaning I was not charged for the 30 pages i just printed. I quickly noticed and realized the error i got on the recharge machine while printing. I had another job to print, I gave the command to print and again inserted my card into the recharge machine and got the same error as card is currently blocked. I checked and was not charged again. And thats how I have been printing for a while now and my current balance is still 8.70$.I will notify the library eventually of the error and donate a certain amount. But for now, I am a student and its hard to make ends meet.

I was surprised when my straight arrow boss, non-drinker and non-smoker, took out a sample-sized pack of cigarettes at the Denver Airport and started chain-smoking as he sipped his Manhattan at the airport bar. When I was twelve, my dad died. I have five siblings and we ranged at the time from seven years old to eighteen. He, in front of my mother who had been laughing at his denigration of my handyman attempts, grabbed me, shook me hard, and screamed in my face "You stupid little b***ch!" and stormed out of the house.Mom then spanked me for trying to ruin her marriage.I just wanted my dad back, but I couldn't even say that because what if it made the step-dad feel bad?

This answer is going to make me sound like a spoiled brat, but here goes…I wasn’t actually looking for a new position, but I was contacted by a company for a position in a company about 5km from my house. The company was in the most beautiful office park, and I often commented that I wished the company I worked for would move there. Close to home and beautiful. There was a lake with ducks and Egyptian geese.So when they asked me to come in and have an interview, I agreed.The first interview turned out not to be an interview at all. They just wanted me to write a test. I suppose they wanted to make sure I could do the job before offering me the position, which is fine but I wanted to make sure the position was something I wanted first anyway.The second interview, was more what I wanted. After answering all of their questions, I got to ask mine.Mel: Do you have flexi-hours?Interviewer: No, but if you travel from very far away, you can start at 7am and leave at 4pm rather than the usual 8am - 5pm.Mel: Can I work from home at all?Interviewer: No. Never.Mel: What makes this a nice company to work for?Interviewer: We have a pool table. Sometimes after work we will play pool. Also the directors are really nice and we aren’t afraid to talk to them.Mel: Is that all?Then I told them about the company where I currently work.We have a pool table and 2 ping-pong tables, and a foosball table, and a dart board. Also Jenga, Chess, Pictionary, Scrabble and various other board games. We play sometimes after work, or during lunch, or when the company decides to host a tournament, or that time when there was a power failure, or when a director has challenged you.We have flexi-hours. I can start work at 6am and leave at 3pm and miss all the heaviest traffic. I also get to work from home 2 days a week.One day a year, we can spend doing work in our community. Some people work at a school, in an impoverished area nearby. Some of us go and work at an animal shelter, in that same area. The company arranges it for us, and our pay gets affected, not at all. And volunteer work is so good for the soul.The company pays a catering company to make lunch for everyone at work, every day. They also provide bread for us to make ourselves breakfast, if we want. With the bread, they also provide margarine, jam, peanut butter and other such things.On Fridays, at 2pm, we can buy beer and cider at cost (actually rounded down) from the company and drink it at our desks.And as far as having directors that aren’t scary, ours sit with us at lunch.I told you, I’m a spoiled brat. No way would I go and work for that company when I’m already working for such a great place.Sure, sometimes I get grumpy about how hard we have to work. Especially since we are geared towards being able to work from home, it means that even when you’re home and relaxing in front of the TV, you could get a call to log on and fix some urgent defect.It’s still worth it. I bet the people at that other place have to work hard too, but they don’t get to sip on a beer while sitting at their desks on a Friday.

THE COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE AND INEFFICIENCY OF OUR MUNICIPAL BODIES IN THE U.S.This morning I received a text message from my mother and it was a picture of a jury summons letter sent to me, in my name. The envelope had HUGE BOLD RED LETTERS on the front that said “Notice of Failure to Respond to Your Jury Summons”. Inside the letter was a list of penalties, fines, and even a threat of jail time for not responding to the jury summons.For those of you who are foreign to the U.S. court system, every U.S. Citizen is required to perform jury duty if summoned after they turn 18. Some people never get called for jury duty (my mother and brother have never once received summons), and some people get letters to do it every two years (me). Which is an entirely different rant altogether. If you don’t respond to the jury duty summons or fail to attend on the day they asked of you, you can face large penalties/fines or face imprisonment. It’s pathetically drastic and excessive. But whatever, civic duty, fuck yeah!ANYWAY, this morning I get this text message and I immediately chuckle because the jury summons is for Los Angeles County and I live and have lived in Portland, OR for over 3 years and also haven’t lived in my mother’s house for over 5 years. I figured, this would be a simple fix, that I would call the Los Angeles County Courts hotline and let them know I’ve moved and they need to update their records per the DMV.The conversation goes like this:*ring, ring* Dial one for english… punch in your jury code…punch in your jury code again…list of options that don’t apply to you…mash the fucking zero button until a representative gets on the line….Operator: Los Angeles County Juror Services, how can I help you?Me: Hi, my mother just notified me that she received a letter in the mail that I have failed to report for jury duty.Operator: So why haven’t you responded?Me: I am, right now, this is the first I hear of it and I think you have your records wrong, I have not lived in Los Angeles County nor California for over three years.Operator: Have you updated your records with the DMV?Me: Yes, I am a permanent Oregon resident and have been for 3 years. I have an Oregon Driver’s license and I am registered to vote in Oregon.Operator: Well, that’s not what our records show.Me: Where do you get your data?Operator: From the California DMV.Me: When was the last time you have updated your data? Because even in the California DMV I have moved from my mother’s house and yet she’s still getting letters from you.Operator: We don’t need to update our data. You need to update us.Me: Huh? I need to call the juror service hotline and let them know I no longer live in California? Why don’t you just update your data with the DMV?Operator: It is your responsibility to update the DMV.Me (as calmly as I could muster): I have updated the DMV, I have an Oregon Driver’s License, you haven’t updated your records.Operator (now having big attitude): You’re the one who hasn’t notified the DMV because our records show that in California you still live at your mother’s address and you’re telling me that you now live in Oregon but we never received proof of that.Me: You’re not understanding me, when I re-register to vote and change my permanent address, it is up to you to update your own records and communicate with the California DMV that has received notice from the Oregon DMV that I no longer live in California. I’ve done my due diligence, your system is inefficient, you’re wasting paper and my time.Operator (now yelling at me): Well, if you want us to update our records you’re going to have to fill out a form and provide proof of Oregon residence via ID and a utility bill.Me: No, I’m not going to do that. You can call the Oregon DMV yourself and verify that I have changed my address years ago and sort this out. I don’t have time for this.Operator: So you want to be in contempt of court for not showing up to your jury duty??You get the gist of this 30 minute phone call. It went around in circles. I would like to say that this woman was just bad at her job or didn’t know the system, but unfortunately, THIS IS THE SYSTEM. The municipal governments throw millions of dollars into a hole that is labeled “bureaucracy” and the red tape is so fucking thick you need a pair of scissors with a 50 carat diamond blade to cut through it. This woman is one of hundreds of interactions I have had living in the U.S. and trying to do my due diligence. Paperwork gets lost, going online is still apparently a nonexistent unicorn for municipal governements, phone operators are rude, everything costs you an arm and a leg. It takes months and sometimes years for you to have an arraignment on a simple traffic violation. I can almost guarantee you that even when I do provide proof of Oregon residence, my mother will still get a jury summons for me at some point in the future.It’s inefficient, it’s a waste of my precious time, it’s expensive, it’s wrong for tax payers to continue to pay for these “services” and it’s quite frankly insulting. There has to be a better way to get things done.

Names have always been a big deal to me. I started writing stories when I was six or seven (very simple stories at first, of course), but I was most drawn to characters and their names. I didn't just choose names at random, I choose names that felt right to me. Names with the right sounds and flavors were important to me.And as a part of this, my deadname never sounded right to me. Most folks called me by my last name (Zaring), or by a nickname (Dr Pingpong, Rabbi, Legs), or by my first two (at the time) initials (NM), or even just "Z." For my pen name and my stage name I used "NM Zaring." I often thought about what kind of name I'd use if I got to rename myself, and I had several options.So when I came out, I spent weeks working through the possibilities. Some of the possibilities included: Natalie, Natalia (and the various spellings), Nicole, Elise, Alyssa, and Alison. By the time I settled on Natahlia Lysse, I was certain it was the name for me. It felt right and had the sounds that were the most me.So the change became easy at that point. It took about a week before I had no issues writing my name. It took about a month before I no longer looked when someone called my deadname and about the same time before I didn't have a momentary pause before telling folks my name.Now (about 3 and a half years later), I answer to Natahlia, Tahlia, Alia, Lysse, and pay attention whenever someone says Natalie or Natasha. My boyfriend's sister is named Natalia, so I'm still getting used to hearing his parents say Natalia and not refer to me. So it wasn't as hard for me as for other folks, but I also had little to no association with my deadname.
