Prison food tastes good. It gets a bad rap and I don’t know why. They provide a balanced diet that meets all nutritional requirements. When the minimum requirements are only 1500 calories a day, food starts to taste better.The first meal is often given away. If not all of it, at least a portion. New guys don’t realize that everything has value. Nor do they realize just how hungry they may get in the days and weeks to come.It’s a shock to the system. Some people eat toothpaste to get by and others pull stuffing out of their mattress and try to eat that.So when it comes time to eat, people can hardly wait. The most disciplined always save some for later.First thing they told me was to accept the change.“It’s going to feel like you’re starving, but you aren’t. Once your stomach gets acclimated to the portions, you’ll be okay.”We always saved the hard boiled egg for lunch. They provide a breakfast bar at about 3 am that is marketable. It’s like cash. Save one or save 10, that bar is always an easy trade. I could get two eggs for that bar and usually did.At lunch we get a sandwich with turkey or bologna. There’s juice and one piece of fruit. Lastly a small portion of celery and carrots.We sit down and make a spread. The eggs get chopped up and mixed in with top ramen noodles. We only use noodles and not the broth. in fact, we cook the noodles bland and then drain the water. Then we add the flavoring direct.We mix eggs, meat, carrots and celery. Add some mayo and mustard. Keep mixing and guys throw in more. Maybe some cheese sauce from the commissary. Maybe some jalapenos.We take those two pieces of bread and use this spread to make a wrap. It always get rolled like a burrito and never stacked like a sandwich.That’s a bigtime lunch that costs about a dollar and it does taste good. We’re all in it together and that’s good too because generosity shifts.A good contribution can get you in with a good group of guys. Having nothing can keep you on the outs.Oh yeah, they give us two cookies for lunch. It makes for a nice chaser.Quality is relative to availability and prisons don’t buy organic. They won’t provide corn fed beef and if your expectations are that high, realize that quality has a new ceiling.A big portion of top ramen spread and good friends all around - I liked that part. It was good fun and once and I said, “think what we could make on the outside…”Then Brandon said, “We tried it on the outside. It’s not the same. This stuff only tastes good in jail.”People complain about prison food and jail food, but when you see guys eating stuffing from a mattress, those meals they are serving don’t look so bad. Then you find ways to make them better and it’s still punishment, but feels less taxing.A little bit better is always nicer than a little bit worse.So don’t compare it to what you ate on the outside.Compare it to what you ate yesterday and see if you can improve on it.More calories and better flavor are out there, you’ve just got to learn how to find them.

You mean Death Row inmates. I corresponded with serial killer John Wayne Gacy for several years. While attending a writing convention in Nashville, someone was passing around a book by Gacy, THEY CALL HIM MR. GACY, which was nothing but copies of letters he had received from reporters, family members, talk show hosts, lawyers. It was published the previous year, 1989.He murdered at least 37 male teenagers and adults and buried most in a crawlspace under his house. He was arrested in December of 1979 and was executed by lethal injection in May of 1994.During that time, he had a day job. He worked in the laundry. He also did paintings, mostly of the Seven Dwarves. He sent me a list of his paintings and their prices, and if I had bought one he did of Elvis for $65 I could sell it today for $3000. He couldn’t make money from his work, so a friend in Indiana had all of the paintings he had done before his incarceration. So the artwork he did while in prison was more a hobby. But he loved getting mail, and he answered every letter he received.I wrote him on a whim and was genuinely surprised that he answered. So I contacted a magazine that would print a potential article on his last days, and we wrote back and forth for about two years. The postmark on that last letter above is dated six days before his death. But he asked for people to send him photos of themselves and he would send them a questionnaire to fill out and he would fill one out in return. That creeped me out, so I sent him a photo of the recently-closed Clown’s Alley tavern in exchange for that Q&A. A good portion of his salary went to buying stamps, envelopes, and paper. The questionnaire was photocopied in bulk in 1989 by MYCO, Inc., who also published the book.He was very narcissistic. The real killer was a media monster, not him. He would often talk about his paintings of the Dwarves and his work as Pogo the Clown at parties. Anything related to his conviction was blamed on the media. And the title of his “book”, because all it was was a bound copy of photocopied pages, was filled with narcissism, too. Every letter I sent started “Dear John…”, the ones that “call him Mr. Gacy” would have been from the offices of Oprah Winfrey or Larry King, because of course they were professional letters.So I do have a copy of that form, the one that says his current address is Death Row, Chester, Illinois. He loved to blame the media. Take a look at who one of his heroes was at the time of his execution.

That means from the Maori through Indonesia and Polynesia, then Vietnam, straight up past Mongolia, and east out to Japan and west right out past India — all one “race”. There were quite a few court cases where light-skinned Japanese (etc) petitioned to be declared white — they usually weren’t — and where dark-skinned South Asians (etc) petitioned to be declared non-black — which sometimes worked. In fact, it worked so well that some American Blacks donned turbans and comic-opera inaccurate “Eastern” garb to perform more widely as an “Indian” musician than they’d ever be allowed to do in their original identity.So in the 1800s, there was white and Black. Period. Well, ok, and Native Americans, but to the people that mattered, they hardly counted (and were all dead, anyhow, right?). As colonialism and rising globalization brought more and more people who were neither white nor black to North America, there became an increasing dilemma about how to classify this cacophonous mob of confusing non-white people.Eventually the terms “Arab” and “Asian” came to be widely used, and some classifiers (see also Why is "Caucasian" a term used to label white people of European descent? ) also separated Pacific islander from the general morass of “Asian”. But in general, everyone from the Mysteeeeerious East was just called one thing, unless you felt you needed to specify a country.So, like I said: racism. And a racist tendency to dismiss as unimportant distinctions between different groups of “unimportant” people.
