If interested, check out Geology of Oregon by Baldwin.Very briefly the Oregon Cascades are Tertiary volcanoes related to the subduction and melting of an oceanic plate beneath the western third of the state. The Coast Range is due to folding and uplift related to compression by the suducting plate. East of the Cascades and south is Basin and Range terrane caused by crustal extension, and the north and east are Columbia River basalts overlying earlier silicic volcanics, and then the intrusive plutonics comprising the Wallowa Mtns in the northeast corner.

It’s somewhat true… However, they are in for a shock when they get there. Unless you are in Portland and most of it’s suburbs, it’s pretty racist. Maybe not outwardly, but those micro racist crap that eats away at you. It rains 10 months out of the year and when it snows plan on doing nothing because the state has only a few snow plows in the metropolitan areas. Then everyone is thinking housing is cheaper. Cheaper than where? Yes cheaper than California, but you make less money to pay for that cheaper house. Then there is the no sales tax, but what they don’t tell you is how high the property and individual income tax rate is.Yes it’s beautiful, but don’t think moving to Oregon is all what it’s cut out to be. It’s the little things that will drive you crazy. Yes I lived there for 18 years of my life and gladly moved back home. Home ownership is not the only thing in life. Having a multicultural society where people are accepting is priceless. Yes, I go and visit but I am very happy not to live there.

University of Oregon is (or was) excellent. I liked it so much that after working for a couple of years after my B.Sc., I went back for my M.Sc.Oregon State is also a good solid school, with an agricultural and engineering focus. Once upon a time, HP had a lab that was well coupled with the EE and CS departments. However, I believe that is no longer true; you would want to check. Corvallis is a smaller town; Eugene/Springfield is about 3 times the size of Corvallis. Corvallis, on the other hand, is a bit closer to Portland. Both schools are well respected academically; for example, the current president of the ACM is from Oregon State (professor emeritus Cherri Pancake; she’s a terrific advocate for computer science education, and yes I’ve met her, and yes, that’s her real name.)Advice: visit and actually talk to faculty. You can get a great (or poor) education in both schools depending on fit and what you put into it. Computer science jobs are more likely to be found elsewhere (Portland, Silicon Valley, or in my case, Toronto) but they are both great places for school.

Very similar as far as weather and politics.Washington State has sales tax, Oregon has income tax. Both have completely legal cannabis.Oregon has a better coastline, Washington has Puget Sound and the islands. The Cascade Mountain Range goes down the almost middle of both states. Both are in The Ring Of Fire volcanically active mountains.Ring of Fire - WikipediaBoth have active citizens involved in sportsMy nephew at Stevens Pass ski area. Both are equally beautiful. And both get a lot of rain.

It depends on what you’re purchasing, where you’re purchasing it, and where you’re going to be using it. In Washington state, for example, it may be possible to buy some things and not pay sales tax if you can demonstrate you are an Oregon resident, and will not use the purchased item in Washington.Sales tax exemption for nonresidentsI have a friend who makes hats. Sometimes she sells one to an Oregon resident, who asks for a tax exemption. But, of course, since the Oregonian still has a head* while inside Washington state, my friend explains that they are free to use the hat on their return to Oregon, so a tax exemption would be dubious at best. It’s also relevant that she’d have to process a tax-free sale, with all justifications, in order to do this. It’s too much trouble for her, so she doesn’t pursue it. The prospective buyers usually buy the hat anyway.^to the best of my knowledge, every hat purchaser she has dealt with had possessed a head
