It’s somewhat true… However, they are in for a shock when they get there. Unless you are in Portland and most of it’s suburbs, it’s pretty racist. Maybe not outwardly, but those micro racist crap that eats away at you. It rains 10 months out of the year and when it snows plan on doing nothing because the state has only a few snow plows in the metropolitan areas. Then everyone is thinking housing is cheaper. Cheaper than where? Yes cheaper than California, but you make less money to pay for that cheaper house. Then there is the no sales tax, but what they don’t tell you is how high the property and individual income tax rate is.Yes it’s beautiful, but don’t think moving to Oregon is all what it’s cut out to be. It’s the little things that will drive you crazy. Yes I lived there for 18 years of my life and gladly moved back home. Home ownership is not the only thing in life. Having a multicultural society where people are accepting is priceless. Yes, I go and visit but I am very happy not to live there.

University of Oregon is (or was) excellent. I liked it so much that after working for a couple of years after my B.Sc., I went back for my M.Sc.Oregon State is also a good solid school, with an agricultural and engineering focus. Once upon a time, HP had a lab that was well coupled with the EE and CS departments. However, I believe that is no longer true; you would want to check. Corvallis is a smaller town; Eugene/Springfield is about 3 times the size of Corvallis. Corvallis, on the other hand, is a bit closer to Portland.Both schools are well respected academically; for example, the current president of the ACM is from Oregon State (professor emeritus Cherri Pancake; she’s a terrific advocate for computer science education, and yes I’ve met her, and yes, that’s her real name.)Advice: visit and actually talk to faculty. You can get a great (or poor) education in both schools depending on fit and what you put into it. Computer science jobs are more likely to be found elsewhere (Portland, Silicon Valley, or in my case, Toronto) but they are both great places for school.
