I'll answer my own question...I discovered that USPS will actually forward most mail abroad for a limited period of time.  This was difficult to discover as the USPS online form for address change doesn't allow writing in a international address, nor does the physical PS Form 3575 they offer as part of a moving packet.  However I did find the following @ http://faq.usps.com/eCustomer/iq..."How do I file a Change of Address for an International address?If you are moving to an International address outside of the United States, you will need to fill out the same Change of Address (COA) form (PS Form 3575) that is filed for a domestic move at your local Post Office™. Provide direction on how and where you need mail forwarded.
