The 2010-11 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked National University of Singapore (NUS) 34th in the world. How good is NUS compared to other top universities?
It depends on what you mean by good.A little bit of my background is in order: I got my BSc (Hon.) from NUS in 2004 and my PhD from the University of Illinois (UI). Both are deemed to be excellent engineering/science schools. I work in research in science and engineering and have also taught in US public universities at the undergraduate and graduate level. So, the basis for my judgement would be skewed largely in terms of science and engineering research and education, and is based on my experience studying/teaching/working in Singapore and the US. Although it's been almost 10 years since I graduated from NUS, I believe that my observation still apply because I maintain some professional contact with the school. In terms of undergraduate education, NUS and UI are comparable. I would venture to say that the undergraduate science/engineering curriculum in NUS is more rigorous and comprehensive than that in UI and even MIT. The coverage is simply deeper in NUS and other British-based tertiary institutions. On the other hand, this says nothing about the mastery of the topics by the students. NUS students are probably more exam-smart (a consequence of the fierce grade competition) but less likely to engage the course material outside of the formal curriculum than UI students. For example, NUS students who go on exchange in UI and other top US public universities (such as UC Berkeley and UT Austin) usually crush their American counterparts in quizzes and exams, even though they may only slightly above average or just average in NUS. However, they are less likely to be interested in the subjects for their own sake. The sort of intellectual curiosity that you find in students in peer US universities is somewhat diminished in NUS and the wider Singaporean society. So, you do not get the feeling that knowledge is something to be valued for its own sake. In terms of academic research, I do not think NUS is comparable to the likes of UI, Berkeley or Austin even though many of the faculty have excellent pedigrees and funding is ample. This is largely because the quality of its graduate student population is signNowly inferior to the aforementioned US universities. Another reason is that Singapore lacks a vigorous intellectual atmosphere which may be due to the somewhat heavy-handed censorship culture. Although NUS can boast of many excellent faculty members, it should be noted that most of them did their best work before moving to NUS. This is not to say that they do lousy research in NUS. However, this suggests that NUS itself is not very adept at generating profound original research but others may disagree with me. It is difficult to think of any paradigm-shifting research that was done in NUS although this is probably due to the very nascent research culture in Singapore.Of course, NUS is probably very good at many other things (e.g. law and medicine) but I do not feel sufficiently competent to make that assessment.

In the light of jobs being replaced by technology, are you better off trying to start a business or seeking out higher education to acquire new skills?
I understand your fear. But jobs are NOT replaced by technology. Technology is simply a tool helping us do our job better. Skills required are different and technology cannot replace jobs in most of the cases.I understand the hype, but, dont know how much of that is really true. Lets take simple example of Indian software testing… how many jobs are really replaced by automated tools?Starting business is ALWAYS a good idea. But, it is not for everyone. One needs to have the right attitude and appetite for business…Acquiring skills never hurt anyone…. go for it at all timesHigher education… never understood this concept. Does master or doctorate guarantee jobs? I dont know, unless you are looking at academics or research. For all other jobs, Bachelors degree is more than plenty and most if it, one would not be using on the job…. anyways :)
In New York State's admission to practice process, what are the criteria of a period of "law related employment" for which the applicant must provide a form affidavit?
First, if you're filling out the affidavit, I assume you passed the NY bar in which case congratulations. Second, I had the same question as you when filling out my NY bar application earlier this year. I emailed the bar and asked and their answer was "law-related employment" consists of any employment where you had to use lawyer-like skills and judgment. I also worked as a research assistant in law school and, by the NY definition, it counted as law-related employment. If, however, your research assistant job involved a lot of photocopying, web page design, etc and hardly any lawyering skill or judgment, then it probably wouldn't count. I agree with Matthew Bohrer that putting it down is best if there's any doubt in your mind. Andy
Higher Education in the United States of America: How would you rank the University of California, Davis, University of California, Irvine , University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of California, San Diego for their computer science MS programs?
Thanks for A2AAs far as the MS is concerend you can always take a look at the US New report and extract the rankings for all the 3 different universities based on the courses. It is usually the most referred one as far as I am concerned. Having said that there are lot of other surveys which will speak of Ranking. As far as the job prospects , AI course and Total cost you can always take a look at the last 5 year academic ahievements of the universities. You should asses the industry and academic partnerships done past 5 years, the number of job fairs and the list of companies where students usually intern. These will give you cues about the potential job umbrella. As per as the cost it is usually based on the region in US. However for Masters there are tuition waiver and assitantships as well. You can take a look at their admision processes. Most important thing is to carefully go through their websites. You can also take a look at the below links which states Berkley is top ranked among 3.
