I am from the 2012 batch and I am at Texas A&M University now.While most of the things I wanted to say have already been pointed out by Pranesh, there is so much work to do yet:1. Bring inter department course flexibility.I got into instrumentation and control engineering department and during my third year I lost interest on my department subjects(partly because of poor teaching, an outdated syllabus and the attitude of the teachers). So, one solution which we can think of is inter department course flexibility. By third year, all students would have found out their interests and the institute might do better by giving us only 3 core courses(just to develop the core capabilities on the department) and leaving the remaining subjects as electives. This would enable the students to choose their own career path rather than the institute forcing them to choose theirs.Allow students to pick courses based on interest and not gpa. This is one thing that MUST change! When a good student(with a lesser gpa) is not allowed to take a course which he is interested in, he would start adding himself to the group of not so good students. I really do understand the difficulties and the ego clashes that might occur out of it, but, if we are to become a good institution, we must rise above all these. Shouldn't we? Also, this would force the teachers into more research, design courses that are more state of the art, lead them into updating themselves(I was shocked at the way the teachers reacted to my final year thesis and in the u.s, the same project got me an 'A' in a course). The greater the number of electives introduced, the lesser the burden for the teachers(for this we should have more teachers, specializing in their particular fields). 2. Leave classroom freedom to students:Let them bring laptops, mobile phones, whatever! No one, in these days, listens to a course because they have to! People listen to a course when 1.they are really interested in that subject. 2. The teacher is extraordinary in explaining a course. So, confiscating mobile phones, shouting at students only disturbs the decorum of the class and puts off those who are really interested.3. LibraryA library that is not 24*7 in a top technical institute? This is going to be the biggest joke ever. The library should have study rooms, individual study rooms, group study rooms, whatever that makes a student come to the library. I personally think a canteen below the library is not a bad idea at all. You just cannot allow students to go back because of these petty issues like hunger, thirst, etc. etc.Coming to the important part, books!!!It is appalling to see the library not having the course books or having just 5-6 copies for a class of 80! I still remember us going to the library on the first day and we would  come back to our rooms empty handed cursing the institute library and the lack of books.4. Partiality, marks and other issues!We know that we cannot pass in a subject if we have a grudge against a teacher! How are marks and discipline even interlinked? To eliminate partiality, answer keys must be published online and students must be shown their answer papers for every subject. The current scenario is that students who think that they got lesser grades request their teachers to show their answer scripts and have to beg for marks even if their answer is correct!This I think gives undue power to the teachers making them to think they are superior souls!5. Leave the final sem project to the students!Don't force the students to do their thesis at NITT. Let them do it wherever they want so that they can learn stuff better and also it would make them do better projects. Currently, in many departments, the guide and the group for the final project is selected by lots.(what a cruel joke!) . So, you are forced to do whatever the teacher is confident about and people don't even listen to your ideas. This is the most disappointing aspect of the thesis.6. Security!I don't know the current scenario, but when I studied anyone could enter the campus. Also, the mess workers, who were posted in Opal would take photos of girls and would be discussing about that in our mess. Can someone explain the rationale behind not trusting your own students and trusting random people?7. Give more importance to sports.The grounds behind ceesat, pearl,jade and sapphire should be cleaned of cow dung by the authorities and should be rendered usable at any time of the year.8. Give mess ratings and remove bad messes.Ask people to fill up a form about the mess every year and take it seriously(not like the course evaluation form). Every year, the mess that gets the poorest rating should be terminated. We are ready to pay for good food, please don't give us bad food.9. Bring in a small shop inside every hostel that sells cool drinks note books and stationary. This would reduce physical strain for sure.10. Cycles and hostel security.Why are so many thefts inside the hostel? Why are cycles stolen? I am sure that the security has a hand in it and they should be given strict accountability. Another issue with the security was that: when we were in Garnet-C, there used to be many days when we didn't get water. When we asked the security, he abused us. Only later when we went near the pump switch, we found out that he had forgotten to switch on the motor. A simple lapse had put 240 people in distress for 3 days!!!11. Finally the no dues distress!While leaving the campus I had a bitter experience because I forged the signature of a lab assistant(I had no dues anywhere, mind it) and the department  went to the extent of withholding my degree(I had a 7lpa job and 5 admits and the director saved my head here, thank you sir). When you torture people to pay for the broken lab equipments then and there, why have a no dues finally? Also, it is that time of the year when no lab assistant is readily available and you have to give this form before leaving. We are practically at the mercy of these lab attendants.All this is written not in the intention of mocking at the institute but to make it a healthier and a more organized one!
