Charleston is a great food city, the restaurants are as good as any you're likely to find in San Francisco or New York. I recommend Poogan's Porch, but there are many other great options. Check out King Street, market Street or the Battery for some great shops and cool old mansions. Really the architecture is what makes Charleston. A nice walk in the Battery or the College of Charleston campus has made more than a few people fall in love with the city.
