I am a Chartered Accountant with AIR in both IPCC and CA final.  So I guess I can pretty much answer this question. Let us start with what is the criteria to appear in merit merit list of ICAI (or be a rankholder in simple words). ICAI recognizes meritorious candidates in Intermediate (IPC) and CA Final examination, by ranking them on the basis of the aggregate marks obtained by them in both the groups, on an all India basis, subject to his/her having secured a minimum of 55 percent marks, in one sitting without availing of any exemptions. There is no practice of declaring any candidate as having secured a rank beyond 50 in Intermediate (IPC) or CA Final Examination.Source: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India  By above definition you need to fulfill following criteria to get  a rank:Clear both groups at a time; Secure minimum 55% marks; and Get your score among top 50 scores to fulfilling above criteria.   So those of you who are planning to write you exams group by group or targeting    that magical number of 50% are out of the race. Anything discussed below does not apply to you. Now we are left with just one more condition (the toughest one :P).  For this you need to outshine other people who are writing the exam.  To put this in perspective this is a comparative testing (like CAT score).  Being good may or may not work, you have to be better than other people. To be better than others you need to ask one question to yourself over and over again, ie, is this the way any average student will study.  If answer comes yes then you need to prepare better, put more sweat in it and make yourself better than an average student. Mind you! An average student here is one who is giving both groups and targeting a score above 55%. Now how do you beat that 'average student'?? You do not even know who all are appearing for exam and what is their intellect level. Definition of 'average student' changes with every attempt.  I got a rank with 64% in IPCC and many of my juniors didn't got even with 73%. You can never know what will be 'average' in your attempt. Below are few tips that, if followed religiously, can ensure that you meet the third condition irrespective of how intelligent an 'average student' is: Give your best: Make sure that when you are done with the studies you can tell yourself with full confidence that you have given your 100%.  Any 99.99% is not acceptable.  Remember you have to outshine other people and there are no excuses in competition. No selective studies: Do not ditch any topic or any sub topic.  Everything that you leave becomes super important for the exams. Do not be so overwhelmed by consolidation that you loose focus of valuation and accounting standards. Do not be so amazed by standard costing that you leave costing theory (which came for 30 marks in Nov 2012). Plan better: Spend first 30 mins of your study leaves planning the study pattern and allocate time to each subject and each revision taking adequate buffer for any contingencies. With no prior studies and target of three revisions this is what my study plan looked like when I started studies for CA final (123 days available). Keep your health intact: To give 8 grilling exams in a row you need hell lot of stamina and you do not want to fall sick during the exams and waste all your efforts. Dedicate 1 hour everyday to exercise, eat least possible junk, take 7 hours of sleep everyday. These are three thumb rules to keep your health intact while you study. However you can deviate from this during the exams as that's the last  lap of marathon and its OK to fall sick AFTER your IDT exam. No coaching in last 4 months: Make sure you dedicate last 4 months fully to self studies.  Coaching are the biggest time wasters and time is the thing that you will need the most.  On how coaching are time wasters please read my answer on Can I become a CA without coaching? Conceptualize, revise & memorize: Remember... you goal is to get good marks in exams and you need to do what is required for it. Try to CONCEPTUALIZE  everything in your mind.  If you cannot do it in first go then REVISE.  Still not happening.. simply MEMORIZE it.  Please understand that there is a trade off between these three options.  Conceptualization takes maximum time when you do it for the first time  and least when you are approaching you exams, whereas, memorizing takes same time throughout the study plan.  You have to choose carefully while preparing. Study study study: You are pursuing one of the toughest course in the world.  You got to study very hard and keep aside all social obligations for 4 months of study time.
