In fact, I never felt special in Beijing, because there were white people all over the place!Since you are talking about accommodations, remember this, it happens everywhere.Hotels will tell you to surrender your passport. Ask your friend or coworker accompanying you to any hotel if the hotel can scan the passport and leave you with the physical passport. More than likely they will say “no” but it doesn’t hurt to ask, even in China.Here are some requirements, and you should never skirt (try to bypass) any rule in China, especially if you are a foreigner and wish to travel or work in China in the future.Apart from Liaoning and Hebei provinces where I encountered this issue regularly I had no issue's. So to me it feels like a regional issue. Though I tend to move every couple of days the number of places I've been is limited so this is not reliable statistics. A fair number of the places I stayed did not register me with the PSB. Some didn't ask for my passport or if presented had only a quick look and gave it back. Also, several seemed at a complete loss on how to register a foreigner, made a copy of the passport to sort it out later.As a foreigner in China myself, I've noticed that China has an awkward love-hate relationship with all things foreign. On the one hand, the Chinese are fascinated by foreigners. English signs on shops and restaurants are fashionable and prestigious. American-style housing suburbs are all the rage. Western sports stars and Hollywood celebrities have massive fan followings here. After decades of Maoist isolation, the Chinese are eagerly traveling to foreign countries, studying English, watching Hollywood movies, eating Western food and listening to Western music.In the same way Americans take pride in the United States, the Chinese also take pride in their country. If you are ever brought to dinner and don’t know how to break-the-ice and initiate a conversation, as about the 5,000+ years of history that China has in comparison to the few hundred the United States has.Be a considerate and polite guest in China, as any perceived slight by a foreigner might come across as disrespecting China or its people, even in relatively petty incidents such as traffic accidents or street disputes.Occasionally, I have been asked if I am aware of China’s laws regarding the stay of foreigners in hotels. If I was asked to sit at a computer, they’d already clicked three or four screens deep to set me up for domestic tourist registration.In most provinces, there are two tabs in the upper left hand corner. There are some subtle differences in each province. When you sit down at the computer the first tab “境内游客入住” will probably have already been chosen. Hotel staff do this automatically. Until you point out the existence of the “境外游客入住” tab they may have been completely unaware that it existed.Point out the Foreign Tourist Residency Registration if asked “境外游客入住” and tell the hotel staff that you understand the PSB requirements for registering foreign guests.Everything that is marked in red, starred, or underlined (depending on the province) must be filled out. Having accidentally misspelled my own name on one very tired occasion, entered my passport number wrong on another, and learning that I had been putting in the wrong visa information.Once (and only once) in Sichuan, the moment I entered my passport number, almost all of the other information that had been entered the night before was automatically filled in. But it only happened the one time in Sichuan and nowhere else.Keep in mind that not every province has the same things marked in red. Passport Number, Passport Type, Country of Origin, Gender, Birthdate, Type of Visa, Expected Date of Departure from China, Date of Entry into China, and Port of Entry are all reliably in red. Room number is never in red but if you don’t fill it out the system won’t allow your submission to go through.I fill out most nearly everything on the form. It’s easier than figuring out what’s in red for this province. Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
