How do so many Indians afford to do MS in USA? How do people without property to sell or money in savings pay for these schools?
I think this is the most common question most MS aspirants have while applying to Grad School. This question is asked in different shapes,How do so many Indians afford to do MS in USAI am going to spend 40 lakhs, what will happen if I don't get a job?The interest rate is so high, how will I repay it back?I do not have a house to sell, my parents wont be able to support, is my dreams to pursue a Master’s gone? There are questions aplenty of this type and most often the answer is the same. I will try to give you an overview of how things work.I like to say that these were the same questions I had before applying, but unfortunately that won’t be the truth. If you have heard of ignorance is bliss - that was me post my undergrad. I ignored the financial aspect of a MS degree till I got an admit. My view was, what will I do if I arrange the funds and don’t get into a school that I want to get into, and the approach worked for me.I would definitely recommend the approach of taking one step at a time, admit first and then think about the funds.I am going to take my example and give you some stats. I went to UW-Madison and the i20 amount that they wanted me to show was ~$44,000, which usually is one year's estimated cost of attendance. While $44,000 for one year looks high, we need to break it down.As you see above the cost of attendance for academic year 2017–18 is $44,370, whereas the tuition fee is around $25,269. The tuition fee is the thing you need to worry about, this is the amount that you will spend from your pockets (assuming you do not have a funding). Let me explain different scenarios on how much it will cost to pursue a Master's degree.Scenario 1 - You have an admit, but aren’t funded while you get an admit. In this case as stated above, you need to only worry about the tuition fee. Wondering what happens to the other components of the fee? Here is the break down,Books & Supplies - Most of the universities have excellent library facilities that will almost always have what you are looking for. From books, journals, publications, patent copies etc. There will also be your seniors who will be happy to lend you their books.Room - Usually students live in shared apartments with their friends. Most often the rent ranges from $300-$500/month, depending upon where you live. On average per year you end up spending $4000 - $6000 for room. You can cover this cost through legal on-campus part time jobs. Every university allows you to work for 20 hours/week. On average you will get anywhere from $8 to $12 /hour. Usually grad students work anywhere between 10–20 hrs/week according to their schedule and need.Getting a part time job is usually very easy. Each university has their own part time job boards that you can apply for. They look something like the picture belowAs you see in the picture, there are umpteen number of jobs that come up for students. These are all jobs for grad and undergrad students. If you work say 13 hrs/week on a $10/hr job - you will earn around $500/month. This is the bottom end of the spectrum. Usually you can expect anywhere between $700 - $800/month on average. This will cover up the rent, groceries, utilities, food, etc.Board, Misc, Travel and Loan fees are something that we will never use up.You might have to pay a segregated fee of $300-$500/sem depending upon the university. This most often covers public transportation, library fee, world class gym and etc.Yup, ideally you will be looking at paying the tuition fee alone, if you are not funded when you get an admit. But you can still get a funding once you get into grad schoolScenario 2 - Getting funded while you are in grad schoolThere is always a need for teaching assistants, graders, project assistants, graduate assistants. And universities do announce it in their forum, like the one shown below,I was looking at the job center for UW-Madison while I was writing this post and there were around 50 assistantships posted in the last 1 week, take a look at the pay. Most of them has tuition waivers - which means you need to pay a total of $0 for as your semester fee. And once you get an assistantship, you keep it till you graduate. As mentioned there are plenty of opportunities for assistantships, all you need to do is keep your eyes open and apply for them. Are these the only assistantships available? Absolutely not. I would say, these account to around 40% assistantships provided by the university. Each department has their own set of assistantships which are usually notified in their respective forums. You just need to have a good resume, mail constantly and show up at the doors in order to get these assistantships. The other way of getting funded is by working with a professor from Day 1. This is the easiest thing you can do - all you need to have is patience, belief and hard work. Once you get into a university, get in touch with couple of Professors who work in an area that interests you. Mention you would like to work under him/her voluntarily (yes that means, he/she will be your advisor and you don’t expect any money back from them) - Why do this? It builds trust, provides you an opportunity to learn and showcase your skills. If you fare well in the first semester - you will get funded in the next sem, I can assure you of this.I would advice anyone without a funding to look out for assistantships and work with a Professor simultaneously. If you are a very confident individual, here are some tricks and tips. Most universities have their deadline for paying the fee sometime in the mid semester, if you miss this deadline you will be levied a fine of $100 (in most cases) - you can take a chance and still look for funding and if you get it by the mid semester you need not pay the fee at all. If not you need to pay the fee with a $100 fine.Even if you pay before the deadline and find an assistantship your fee will be refunded so do not worry about that. So, if you do not have funding in the time of admit, there are ample opportunities for you to get funded when you are at grad school. In addition with assistantships, there are scholarships and other grants that might help you out. Again the trick is to apply for everything.Best Scenario - Funded admitWith a good profile i.e. good grades + good story (yes I believe your story has a deep impact in your admission process and getting funded) and applying early will help you to get a funded admit. In this case you need not worry about spending for your Grad school. In fact you will be earning at grad school. Now that we have admits, how to show money for i20 and VISA?There are quite a few options -1. Bank loan with mortgage, i.e. if your family has a home, pledging it and getting a loan. While most of us have only one house and the idea of pledging it might sound a bit crazy, it isn’t that crazy. Take a look into the probabilities of returning back this money (ROI of your Degree).Post your MS you will earn around $65000-$80000 if you are in midwest like states, you will earn around $90000–$110000 incase you are in the west or east coast. Post tax and living expenses everything evens out, both the midwest and east, west coast folks will have on their hands $4000–$5000 on average. If you have a lavish lifestyle, as an individual you will spend $2500 (car, your own home rent, etc). You will still have $1500. Say if you pay $1000 for loan each month. You will be finishing off your loans approximately in 36–48 months, which is a very good return time.2. Bank loan without mortgages - If you get into the top 10 schools, banks are now willing to give you loans without you needing to show any security. The interest rate is low on this.3. Unsecured education loans with higher interest rate is another option. This is something that has come up new.4. If nothing out of the top 3 worked out, ask a relative to be your security. Again, let them know that you do not need their money, all you need is bank statements to get your i20 and Visa docs. Post that you can get into grad school and then figure out a way to pay the first semester fee (you will have time)There are some other options out there, if you can have your eye open, you will find them. HUSTLE - is the word you need to remember, if you need it you will find it.Finally if you are someone who is constantly worried about the possibility of a job post masters, here is a small glimpse for you,This is the first page of a PDF that showed the number of recruiters at UW Madison for Mechanical Engineering job roles. Here are some stats from the whole document,252 companies visiting for career fair and out of them ~40 sponsored a H1B visa.370 companies which recruit but do not visit UW-MadisonIn total there are around 620+ companies recruiting in a year, from the sample space above we can say 15% of them sponsor a H1B visa. That it almost 100 companies that have opportunities for folks who pursued a Masters degree. Now all you need to do is find your one company.I don’t think finding one will be difficult. All you need to do is stay positive, acquire the right skills in grad school and apply for that job that you want.I was lucky to get funded in my first semester itself, but it involved me doing all these things that I mentioned above. There is tonne of data around you and picking the right one will make your career. How can I apply to financial aid as an international student as I'm wanting to apply to UNC and they ask you to fill the form in the common app?
Which form? There is no financial form in the Common App. Common App is an application form for college admissions. There is a question whether you are going to apply for financial aid, but that’s it.For international admissions to UNC, read the information here: International Students.Paying for Carolina:International students are not eligible to receive need-based financial aid and should be prepared to pay the full cost of attendance for non-resident students. If you are admitted, we’ll ask you to provide documentation that you have sufficient funds to cover the total cost of attendance for one academic year. For 2017-2018, the cost is $53,100.We consider all students, including international students, for a limited number of merit-based scholarships. There is no separate application for these scholarships—just by applying for admission, you’ll automatically be considered for these opportunities. Because these are quite limited in number, we encourage all students to be prepared to pay the full cost of attendance.Since international students are ineligible for financial aid at UNC, there is no application for it. No separate application is needed for merit scholarships, since applicants are considered based on their qualifications presented in the Common App.
Do I have to fill out both the FAFSA (since I'm a US citizen living abroad) and a CSS profile form to get financial aid for colleges?
There’s nothing about the FAFSA that is exclusive or required for US citizens living abroad. The FAFSA is simply the most commonly used application form for student aid applications GENERALLY, and almost every college and university asks for it rather than go to the trouble of inventing their own - even though, in fact, many of them DO have their own application, and STILL want to see a FAFSA.What you actually should do, is go to the website OF THE COLLEGES you are interested in, and check the parts where financial aid is discussed, and see what they want to see.Probably 90% or more will want a FAFSA, maybe 10% will want their own form IN ADDITION to the FAFSA, and a certain number will also want to see the CSS profile. So fill out the FAFSA online. There is part of it which asks for the codes (every college has one) for the colleges you want to have them send the form to. You can send a FAFSA to TEN colleges when you fill out the FAFSA in the first place - AND, you can go back later, and add more colleges.Fill out the FAFSA. The one for fall semester 2018- spring 2019 is available to be filled out beginning, I believe, around October 2017. Most colleges want to have that in their possession by January 2018.Unless, of course, you are independently wealthy, and can afford to pay for college by yourself.Other notes:you fill out the FAFSA every year for the next college year.you can link to the IRS website to pre-fill in a lot of the information the FAFSA asks for (this saves time).you need your own tax return data (if you have such a thing yet) and your parents’ information also.It looks intimidating, but it really isn’t terribly difficult - I would suggest going through the FAFSA website and reading most of the information there before you start, because there are various documents and numbers you will need to have to fill out the form, and it is easier if you have collected all that stuff before you sit down to fill the form out.By the way - I see this idea often and it is wrong - ‘FAFSA’ does NOT give anybody any money. It is an APPLICATION FOR AID. The college you apply to and get accepted at will look at your application, your FAFSA form, all the other required forms you supply to them, and THEN the Financial Aid office will decide a) whether to offer you an aid package and b) what that aid package will contain. It could be a mix of scholarships (great!), grants (wonderful!), student loans of various kinds (read the fine print) and perhaps an offer of work-study. You can accept or refuse any of those, individually.Good luck!
What can I do when a divorced parent refuses to fill out a college financial aid form?
Anything that does not involve going to university and paying for it with loans/grants.Join the service.Get a full time job and take a class at a time and pay with cash.Find an employer that will pay for your schooling.Get married so you can be considered an independent student 9but not from your husband).Jus t get a job. By the time the government lets you file as an independent student(age 24) you may have found an even better pattern that doesn’t involve college at all.
What are the universities in Canada the gives admissions and financial aids to undergraduate international students?
All universities in Canada are of a high caliber so i would first look at the quality of programs in your field of study before you just pick a university based on who gives financial aid to undergraduate international students. To be honest, it is challenging and competitive for the average Canadian to get into a Canadian university so i don't know if there even are such financial incentives for international students. I am sure there must be but do remember that international students pay much more for the opportunity of going to school in Canada. You are taking a spot away from a Canadian so schools make sure that international students pay for the experience. That being said, I loved my student experience in Canada. I am originally from the US and completed three degrees in this country. I went to three of the top universities in the country: University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. U of T and UBC both are very large and have comprehensive programs and financial aid options. UBC International House is a good stop to check funding opportunities for international students as well as UBC's own financial aid department. One last thing...check online for the many scholarships that are out there for anyone to apply for. My friend applied for one for people with red hair...LOL. She got 2000 dollars toward school. Awesome.
How will being a straight A student during my last semester of high school benefit me in terms of scholarships?
Your admission to college will be based on your grades in high school through the end of your first term of your senior year.It will be expected that you will continue to do well. Financial aid will be based upon your record at the time of the admission notification, and therefore, no one at the college will know about your second semester grades while they are making their decisions.NOTE: The financial aid office will be putting together aid based upon Need (which is determined from the FAFSA and sometimes the Profile forms that you And your parents fill out), and has Nothing to do with academic performance. The admissions committee already admitted you. Someone associated with the admissions process, at the time of the decision, will ear-mark you for any merit awards based upon what already is in your application. So, continue to do well in high school, you will need those senior level subjects as prerequisites for some college courses. But the second term will have little to no effect on financial aid, unless you totally screw up and they rescind the admission.................All the best.
If you are disowned by your family before college at age 18, how would you fill out the financial aid form?
I’m not sure what ‘disowned’ means, is this a legal situation where you are emancipated or are you just out of the house and not supported? If you are just on your own and not supported you are out of luck. It isn’t any different than any other kid. Until you are 24, you are not independent for aid and have to file FAFSA with your information and your parent financial information. This does not require your parents to pay anything. But it is used for the aid calculations. There are a limited set of circumstances where you can file with just your information only. This is called being an Independent Student for aid and it is not based on your parents supporting you are not. It is based on these criteria:https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/faf...Now if your parents refuse to provide information you are still out of luck. You may file a FAFSA with only your information but aid will be limited. The most you will get is a federal loan starting at $5,500 for freshman year. You will have to contact the financial aid office at the colleges where you are accepted in order to get the override instructions. You won’t get any Pell Grant or college aid in this case.
Student Financial Aid: How accurate does information have to be on the Collegeboard CSS Profile form?
Fudge? Not sure what you mean by that. Lie, low-ball, hide? Whatever the ruse, it sure doesn't make a lot of sense to do something like that. The numbers you enter will be verified against your tax returns when they're available and any irregularities, mistakes or outright lies will be caught and the awards, if any, adjusted with the correct, current figures. What is more, if they deem the misinformation intentional, you've pretty much blown your chances across the board. Bonehead move really.
