The deadline for ONLINE ONLY is March 15. Submissions received from February 1-February 22 will be included in print and online. Submissions received from February 23-March 15 will be included online only. Papers or proposals received after March 15 will not be considered for publication (NO EXCEPTIONS). Extensions Policy To simplify the submission process, ASCO now offers a submission window for ASCO Educational Book manuscripts for your convenience and, as such, is no longer granting individual deadline extensions. We strongly encourage you to contact and coordinate with the other speakers in your session and colleagues you wish to invite well in advanced of the deadlines to ensure you meet your publication goals. Original Work Policy All submissions must be original work not previously published and must be supported by evidence cited within the paper. Rarely, we will accept articles that do not lend itself to this format. If there is concern, please reach out to the editorial team. Peer Review All manuscripts undergo independent peer review from 2-3 members of our expert panel and an additional review by the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, or member of the ASCO Meetings and Member Publications editorial board. Authors may be asked to respond to the reviewers’ comments and/or revise their manuscripts. Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest Disclosures of potential conflicts of interest (COI) are REQUIRED for all authors. ASCO’s complete COI policy can be viewed here. Faculty authors are prompted to complete COI disclosures through the Speaker Center upon acceptance of their role in the Meeting and no further action is required to report these. Non-faculty authors must complete a conflict of interest disclosure using ASCO’s COI Database. COIs reported in the manuscript body are not allowed and will be removed. All COIs must be reported through ASCO’s COI Database. Reprint Permission and Fees Policies The manuscript author is solely responsible for obtaining reprint permissions. ASCO staff can provide guidance on how to obtain permissions but cannot obtain permissions on behalf of the authors. 2019 ASCO Educational Book 2 Author Guidelines Any figure, table, or other material that is reprinted from an existing source MUST have written reprint permission secured from the original publisher/copyright holder directly by the author. Any licensing fees payable to the original publisher or copyright holder for reuse are the responsibility of the manuscript author(s) and will not be reimbursed by ASCO. The wording of the printed permission line should be provided by the original publisher (if applicable). • Example: Copyright 2010, American Society of Clinical Oncology. Reprinted with permission. The complete citation for the source of the material must be included in the reference list. Send reprint permissions via email to edbook@asco.org or upload with your submission. Publication Information The online edition is available at asco.org/edbook. The website includes the full-volume PDF (print edition) for download and offers viewing of all articles. Individual PDFs are available for download for all articles (online and print articles). The online edition is considered the publication of record. All articles, whether published in print + online or online only, are indexed in PubMed. Your article will be available online at asco.org/edbook approximately 1 week before the start of the Annual Meeting. Registered Annual Meeting attendees will have access to the full-volume PDF edition 1 month before the meeting via the Attendee Resource Center. Print editions are available for purchase during registration, onsite at the Annual Meeting, and at shop.asco.org. Additionally, ASCO Educational Book articles are actively repurposed as blogs and podcasts, curated into thematic book collections, and reprinted in the ASCO Connection magazine, meaning there are even more opportunities for your article to make a lasting impact. You may be invited to participate in recording a podcast and/or reviewing a patient-friendly blog based on your article. 2019 ASCO Educational Book 3 Author Guidelines ARTICLE TYPES 1. Standard Session-based Article • Authored by Annual Meeting faculty • Expand upon the topics to be presented during the authors’ sessions/presentations • Organized in the book by track. • Submission of a combined manuscript is highly preferred. See more details below. a. Combined Articles (Preferred) • One or more of the session speakers, including the session chair, should collaborate to submit a jointly authored manuscript. • Chairs typically provide oversight of manuscript development and delegate writing assignments. • Nonfaculty coauthors may also be invited to write sections. • Approximately 5,000 words in length. b. Individual Articles • Authored by only one session faculty member • Up to two nonfaculty coauthors may be invited to write section • Any authors who wish to submit an individual manuscript MUST notify the session chair and other speakers first and contact edbook@asco.org • Approximately 4,000 words in length 2. Invited Articles • Authored solely by non-faculty authors • Authors/topics are chosen by the editors and Annual Meeting leadership • Paper topics usually fall outside of the scope of the standard session submissions • Unsolicited Invited Articles are not permitted 3. Points of View Articles • Describe emerging, highly debated, or controversial topics in cancer research, treatment, and care • At their discretion, the editors may place a standard submission in the Points of View category • Papers that present a single “pro” or “con” position, are of an editorial rather than academic nature, and/or lack enough supporting references to substantiate opinions are likely to be placed in this section 2019 ASCO Educational Book 4 Author Guidelines REQUIRED MANUSCRIPT ELEMENTS Title Page • Manuscript title o Title does not have to be the same as your session or presentation title • List all author names, including the following information for ALL authors: o Academic degrees o Institution affiliations (including city and state/country) o Contact information (email, phone) o List authors in the order which you wish to see in print • List corresponding author information, including complete mailing address and email address o There can only be one corresponding author o Corresponding author will be sole author to receive communication regarding proof review Abstract • Include a summary of the main points of the manuscript • No longer than 250 words • Do not cite references • The overview/abstract will be published on your article’s PubMed entry Practical Applications Bullet Points • Include a bulleted list, in complete sentences, illustrating how your manuscript’s topic applies to practice or how your topic could affect practice in the future • Include up to five bullet points. Tweet • • • • Include a tweet to promote your article 140 characters or less ASCO staff and the Social Media editor will review tweets and include the link to your article once it is posted Author-written tweets will be tweeted from ASCO or the Social Media editor’s account Running Head • No more than 10 words. Can be the manuscript title or a shortened version of the title. Manuscript Body • Combined papers: Approximately 5,000 words • Individual papers: Approximately 4,000 words • The manuscript body must be in complete paragraph form • Manuscripts must include in-text citations and one complete reference list provided at the end of the paper • Use Medline style for reference formatting. References will be converted to journal style during copyediting. • References should be completed and collated at time of submission. ASCO is not able to provide assistance collating multiple reference lists included in a single paper. • For more information on references, please see section below. • Headings may be used as appropriate. If using various levels of headings, it is strongly recommended that you order by numbers and/or letters to ensure that they are correct in the published article. 2019 ASCO Educational Book 5 Author Guidelines Figures • At least one figure or table is recommended • TIFF, JPG, EPS, and PDF files are acceptable formats. If your only option is to save a file as a JPEG, save it with the highest quality setting. • Do not insert figures within the text of the manuscript; upload as a separate attachment • Figures are required to have a title • Captions are optional • Permissions for reprints or unoriginal work, and fees associated with reprints, are the responsibility of the author • If applicable, an abbreviation listing should be provided below the figure. All abbreviations should be spelled out in order of appearance. Tables • • • • • • • At least one figure or table is recommended Text tables may be uploaded as a separate Word file or included at the end of the manuscript Label all tables in consecutive order using Arabic numerals (i.e., Table 1, Table 2, Table 3) Tables must have a callout in text Titles are required for each table If applicable, an abbreviation listing should be provided for tables as needed. All abbreviations should be spelled out in the order of appearance below the table. Permissions for reprints or unoriginal work, and fees associated with reprints, are the responsibility of the author References and Citation List • Manuscripts must include in-text citations and one complete reference list provided at the end of the paper o ASCO is not able to provide assistance collating multiple reference lists included in a single paper.
