What follows below does not address the question but raises valid points for high schoolers beginning to consider colleges.This answer begins by speaking to a few points brought up by Matthew Cleary in another answer to this same question.First you have to define “better.” I’m guessing you mean more prestigious. The big name universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and Yale, etc, would be harder to get in than out of state UNC. I say this having worked for many years as a college applications advisor.Second, I think bringing up what happened with the non existent classes is a low blow to the overwhelming numbers of students and faculty who knew nothing about this.Yes there is a Greek presence at UNC. Most students don’t belong, but if you want to go to a place with no Greek presence, UNC would not be for you.Most universities are not set up for undergraduates, and while I think UNC is a fantastic graduate school, it is not necessarily the best learning environment for someone who just graduated from high school. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, but it’s not optimum IMO.Yet, even as an undergraduate, you can study with world class professors. Some of these would be large lectures and some would be in a class of about 25 and would likely be in your last couple of years of college. Your freshman and sophomore years will likely be big lectures or smaller classes taught by Teaching Assistants who have their own graduate work that they will put before your needs. There are some excelllent TAs, however.I think going to a small liberal arts college is the best route to a good undergraduate education. You can go to a university for graduate school and enjoy small seminars and personalized instruction and attention once you are past your first year or so.That’s what you get at the best small liberal arts colleges—even as a freshman. We live in NC and my daughter went to Pomona College in Claremont CA, for her first two years. Although Pomona is expensive, she got generous grants and today as a 34 year old, she is not repaying loans to Pomona. Note that “liberal arts” does not mean the science departments aren’t top notch. Maybe they are not cutting edge research, but that would be more of a grad school opportunity, anyway. The best small liberal arts colleges get you ready to go to top notch graduate, law, or medical schools. Then there are those niche schools such as Harvey Mudd, part of the Claremont consortium, which is an engineering school. This is strictly my opinion, but better to go there as an undergraduate with technical interests than to a large university known for engineering.For various non academic reasons, my daughter needed to return to NC for her last two years, and so she transferred to UNC-CH. she loved living in Chapel Hill, but she missed her Pomona seminars. She is still repaying student loans back to UNC and will be for some time.As a side note, my daughter met her future husband at UNC. He’s a graduate of the medical school there which he thought prepared him well for residency.Do not assume that because a college costs a lot—you cannot go there. Pomona was more expensive than UNC—even for an out of state student. But the best known liberal arts colleges, the top ones, have generous financial aid packages—often in the form of scholarships and grants rather than loans.This has gone beyond the scope of the question, but I taught English as a TA while doing my graduate work. It helped me learn to teach. But did it benefit my students as much as a seasoned professional in his field would have? That depends. The vast majority of students are there to check off a requirement and don’t care about the class. But I know I would not have majored in English or gone to graduate school in it had I not had outstanding teachers at the small liberal arts school I attended for two years before transferring to Chapel Hill. These teachers forced us to think and discuss. Classes were small, so there was no escaping. I am by nature lazy, so I tried sleeping in several times to avoid my 8:00 a.m. English class. I soon got a note that the teacher wanted to see me—-whereupon she told me firmly NEVER to miss her class again. I didn’t, and she remains my favorite teacher of the many I’ve had.To me the questioner should not be wondering about getting into UNC—but about whether or not a large university is the best academic fit.Social fit, however, is also a big part of whether or not you are happy at a college. If you’re a sports fan and just generally want to go to a larger school (say your high school was enormous—you might feel the 1500 students at a school like Pomona would stifle you).If for whatever reason you want to go to a large university, Chapel Hill is a beautiful place to be. The town itself is cool with good places to eat—and a 20 minute drive takes you to Durham, a foodie haven. You will get a good education as long as you get yourself to class and do the work. The libraries are fantastic and range from large to small. There’s always something going on.I am glad for my eight years at Chapel Hill and have two children with a man I met there. If you want a university experience, it’s a fine place to go and I’d encourage you to apply. That’s the only definite way to find out if you’ll be accepted. All of the guesses and anecdotal tales on the Internet cannot predict that. As a college applications counselor, I have seen students I thought were a sure thing not get in as well as others I knew had no chance gain admission.

UNC Chapel Hill has a 24 percent acceptance rate. This was the average acceptance for 2018. The early application acceptance rate was 31.7 percent. For out of state students, that number drops to 19 percent as it is a public school in North Carolina that receives state funding so it is mandated that 80% of the people who attend are from North Carolina. Now for the average scores and gpa. The average SAT score is 1347 on the 1600 scale. This would be about 674 for both sections. Thankfully, UNC allows for you to use a super score which allows you to take the highest score per section out of all the SAT tests you’ve taken. The average ACT score is a 30. UNC also allows for a super score to be used here as well. Another advantage for using the ACT, you only have to report your highest score. You don’t have to report every single ACT test you’ve taken. The average GPA is 4.63, so taking either AP or IB classes is necessary, but in my experience, it’s easily doable and it’s easy to succeed. However, the aren’t the only things that will help you get into UNC. Maybe your scores or gpa aren’t exactly where you’d like them to be. This is okay! Participate in many extracurricular activities at your school and show them that you are a well rounded student. They are more likely to admit someone who doesn’t meet the numbers, but participated in numerous other activities than someone who does meet the numbers but doesn’t do anything else.I hope this helps!

My daughter transfer into UNC, she had gone to HS in Chapel Hill and decided that she didn’t want to take the extra AP to get in (she had the GPA & test scores).She went to South Carolina (USC) for a year and then transferred back. She truly disliked USC. I think what Michael, Bernard and Emily said are true, if you are a state resident the process is a bit smoother, but all in all my impression is that it is easier as long as you had a really good college record.

To get admitted to UNC-CH as an out-of-state student, your test scores will most likely need to be in the top 10%. Here’s why: By law, ~82% of each incoming class must be from in-state and UNC-CH is one of the less expensive top public universities. As a result, there are many more out-of-state applicants than there are spots and competition is pretty fierce. Only 14% of out-of-state applicants were admitted for 2018, which is comparable to the admission rate for Cornell University and lower than the admission rate for early decision applicants to most Ivy League schools (https://www.usnews.com/education...). So it may be a bit easier to get into UNC-CH from out-of-state then to get into an Ivy League school, but not much easier.

UNC isn’t a practically-oriented university. That said, even their liberal arts courses will be a pain in the ass to pass/do well at. If you already know what you want to do, go to a school that specializes in that field. If you want to deal with courses that should be easy but purposefully aren’t and have nothing to do with your career, go ahead and go to UNC or a similar “elite” school. In the end, all that matters is that you get a job and have it be the job that you want. You can go to a community college or no college at all to do this. Just be practical! It’s a lot of money to throw down the drain otherwise. Lastly, there are close to zero classes where professors will offer you “top-notch attention” at UNC. The school has only become increasingly competitive over the years since I graduated.

Typically your choice of major doesn't matter for admissions. I'm not sure how difficult it is for an international student to get in as an undergraduate overall but there are definitely quite a few in both the undergraduate and graduate student populations.

So we're all on the same page:UNC (Kenan-Flagler Undergraduate Business) is a 5-semester program.  Current students apply in the Fall of their sophomore year.UVA (McIntire School of Commerce) is a 4-semester program. Current students apply in the Spring of their second (sophomore) year.Both business programs are highly ranked: they tied for #6 on U.S. News and World Report's Best Undergraduate Business Programs. UVA ranks #23 overall vs. #30 for UNC for universities in the US. Both are top-5 public schools (UNC #5, UVA #2).Bottom line: Congratulations, you got into two really good schools. You can't make a bad choice.Here a couple things to consider:Cost: University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill is almost 300% more expensive for you: $33,624 out of state vs. University of Virginia at $12,998. Advantage: UVA.B-School Size: Both are about the same size with ~330 students. Tie. B-School Selectivity: UVA accepts ~60% of applicants with an average GPA of ~3.7 (Application Process: UVA Students). UNC's latest stats are a 58% acceptance rate and an average GPA of 3.56 (UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School). In other words, McIntire is not more selective than UNC. Tie.B-School Focus: There are a lot of different areas you can focus on within business (e.g., accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, insurance, international business, management, information systems, marketing, operations, quantitative analysis, etc.). If you had an area you knew you wanted to focus on, you could check out how both schools compare on individual USN rankings. Hard to say.Based on this, unless there's something about the focus of the business school that would sway you one way or the other, the only reason to pick UVA is cost. If cost isn't a concern, they're even. So: where do you want to go to school in general? Have you visited both? Which one seems more "you"?
